I figured living down here now so close to the Mecca I should probably start trying Bourbon. This weekend I went out and decided to start with a rye and a wheat so I picked up MM and EC12. So far I prefer the EC12. While I was out I did pick up a Van Winkle 12 to stash, The MM to me was very plain, is there another wheat that I may want to try, before I declare that I like ryes better? It's good to be here on an active board it took a while but I am here now.

Yes, some other wheaters you might want to try include: Maker's 46, Old Rip Van Winkle 10/107, Very Special Old Fitzgerald (may need to run for the border for that one) and Old Weller Antique. The Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 y/o (we often call it Lot B around here) you bought is a step up too. Other favorites of mine are Pappy Van Winkle 15 y/o and Weller 12.

To repeat what Josh said, yes, try some Weller. Antique or 12yr are great choices. And I'd pop that Lot B, rather than stash it, since no one's getting any younger.

And to further explore Rye-based Bourbon, check out Old Grand-Dad 114, which is always a bargain.

Welcome Fellow Hoosier... What part of IN are you in?

The above suggestions are good ones and cover almost all available wheaters, but if you can find one, look for the Parkers Heritage 10 yr Wheat, or the William Larue Weller. These are both cask strength and somewhat available if you look hard enough.

I am in Evansville, and while it is an average sized city some of these are not found around here that I can find. I may have to make the trip to Louisville and see what I can find there.

and you are right... Selection is sparce in E'ville.

Check out Frontier Liquor on South Green River Rd. They had the Parker Heritage and a Larue Weller when I was there last.

That was the first place I went, they had plenty of Handy, and ER17 but no Weller, They also had PVW15 for 85 too rich for my blood just starting out. Varsity had PVW for 299 I almost peed a little.

No, its not necessary. Rye-flavored bourbons are better.

Also, keep an eye on the Social forum as a couple of us in Indy have a get together every once in a while.

It looks like bourbon may not last long around here, I found a use for the Makers, Old Fashioneds and Manhattans

Welcome aboard snowrs. I like all Bourbons but favor rye recipe.
