got this cheese at Eataly, Mario Batali's big Italian market/restaurant in NYC. It's around $50 per pound, so I had to ask for a small piece, still around $20, but quite tasty.

Batali knows what he's doing - even when he's doing Spanish like at Casa Mono, he's always on.

What kind of cheese, and what are those on top? Toasted pine nuts? Can't tell from the picture...

not exactly sure about the specific type of cheese or what's on top. it's got a bold taste. we were tasting several cheeses for a party at my brother-in-law's and I saw this one; being a whiskey lover, I had to try it. the girl behind the counter said it was so strong that we had to try it last. My wife (not a big whiskey drinker), my b-i-law (likes whiskey) and I all loved it. as I said, bold rather than strong. I went back the next day for a piece to take home and the guy (this time) at the counter said that it's not always in stock. wish I had more info about it. seems like a rather exclusive item, at least here in the USA.
must admit, that there was a tobacco cheese next to it that we didn't try.

A cheddar with malt whisky is also made. It's called glenphilly and I can recommend it. The cheese taste is more dominant than the whisky taste iirc

Actually looking at the picture more closely, I wonder if those are spent malt grains on top ... a bit dark, so perhaps toasted? Really interesting - next time I'm in NYC I'm going to make a point to try it if they have it available - thanks for posting.

It does look more like barley than pine nuts, but it's hard to tell.
