Hey all, what is your favorite snack to accompany your pour? Nuts? Chips? It's Monday night football tonight and I need some ideas.

I'm a pretzels guy anyway and also find them a good complement to bourbon, but mostly what I like with bourbon is...

If drinking on the rocks, it's pretzels. If neat, maybe a small bit of dark chocolate, otherwise nothing.

Chocolate (of course)... also nuts )macadamias mixed with dry-roasted almonds).

Lately, when I want something a little more substantial, its been crackers and some really good triple-cream cheese.

Right now I'm enjoying the heavenly combination of Rittenhouse Rye BIB and pistachios. Try it, trust me! :yum:

I usually don't eat anything when I'm drinking spirits, but when I occasionally do it is usually either natural, unsalted nuts (pecans, almonds, walnuts), dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, apples, etc), or, rarely, brown sugar or other darkly sweet candy.

While I can't say I often have it, even though it's fairly easy to make, there is a great spread for crackers, that you generally can only find in Kentucky, called Benedictine. It doesn't contain bourbon, but it's such a Kentucky "thing" that it just has to go well with bourbon.

It is a cream cheese base flavored with cucumber and onion juice, then colored just a little with green food coloring.

I don't know much about it, except it is ubiquitous in Kentucky. I don't know where it comes from, why it is called that, or why it has to be green. I like it. It's tasty.

I can't say that there is any one snack I like with bourbon, but brownies sure go well with it. Actually, I often get a taste of that slightly burnt, corner of the brownie pan taste in some bourbons--especially OGD114.

I hope this isn't an impetus for a new thread...What snack are you bringing to the Gazebo Table? :D

Thanks everyone for great suggestions. In our tasting last night we had some plain pretzels along with some hot-n-sweet peanuts and some cinnamon peanuts. All were very good. Will have to throw some dark chocolate into the mix next time.

I like anything chocolate, but I also like kettle corn with bourbon. I find the combination a sweet and salty goes pretty well with bourbon or rye.

When I'm camping in Cherokee North Carolina I like to grab a bag of boiled peanuts take them back to camp. Then I would have a pour of Rare Breed and eat the peanuts while they are still hot.

Usually Iíll have jerky, preferably Buffalo Billís Cajun, or some sunflower seeds. While drinking from my better bottles I tend not to eat anything unless I get really hungry though.

I mostly don't eat while drinking bourbon. I do remember eating watermelon while drinking Old Rip Van Winkle 10 year old 90 proof and finding it Wonderful!

i don't usually eat anything with bourbon -i am trying to taste the flavor and i worry the food may interfere to much. however, the references to chocolate are making me rethink that position....

I'm not a huge chocolate fan, but brownies do sound like a good idea. I've also tried vanilla custard, and I think it goes great, especially if you use a small amount of Bourbon in the custard. Something sweet like EC12 is good for this.

Bahri or Medjool dates are really good with
OGD 114 or most any hi-proof bourbon.

What a great thread! I have never been able to find that perfect pairing. I do like pretzles, but they aren't perfect. I had never thought of chocolate, going to have to try that very, very soon.

I am used to very strong cheeses with red wine, but they don't seem to be right for bourbon.

I usually do not eat anything with bourbon, but sometimes I enjoy the company of a piece of dark chocolate. Once I had a dark chocolate with almond pieces and it was really good.

I agree that chocolate is a great companion to bourbon....

However, instead of a "snack-with" bourbon, I usually use some not-too-sweet dark chocolate as a transition from dinner to my first glass of bourbon after dinner.

It really seems to give me a cleansing of the mouth where the food-into-bourbon might taint the first glass on the tongue

I rarely eat ice cream, but for some reason I absolutely love a little bit of vanilla ice cream with (or after) some bourbon. I don't like to eat much else with it usually, though I might have to give some of these suggestions a try.

My favorite way to enjoy bourbon is right after sex, along with some cookies or chocolate. It doesn't get much better than that.

Since I'm still palate training, I'm mostly in the "I usually don't eat anything with bourbon" camp, but the other night I raided the bowl of Halloween leftovers and came up with a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. Quite tasty with whatever I was drinking that night (EC12, I think).

Personally I thought the post about having bourbon and cookies after sex was very interesting. There have been threads before about when you prefer to drink your bourbon and I have never read after sex. Interesting indeed and 2 things answered in one post (snack and occasion).

I see that you're Swedish... on a side note, I got turned on to my favorite bourbon, Booker's, by a Swedish musician named Mats Gustafsson, who likened his experience drinking Booker's to hearing Peter Brotzmann's album Machine Gun the first time.

well, i'm not so forward, but i do like to read about tantric history when sipping....(and no, tantra isn't about s** :grin: )

no, seriously, though i am no prude, i admit, my bourbon tasting, IF accompanied with food, happens about 10 minutes AFTER engaging in salacious, scandalous nibbles of......DARK chocolate. i mean it! no hidden meanings there! actual chocolate!!

and for less pronounced pours (like good ole bushmills), a good sharp cheese and table water crackers works...along with quality pretzels!

Here I go again, reviving an old thread. Favorite snack with bourbon for me is Planter's Deluxe Mixed Nuts. Planter's just does it right every time out.
I love Pound, too, but only because he led me to Li Po, which led me to Tu Fu and beyond.

Good pretzels work with anything, they're one of my favorite snacks of all time. Never tried bourbon with soft pretzels, though. I grew up outside of Philly where the soft pretzel vendors on the street served 'em hot with cheap yellow mustard. Damn, I'm gonna cry, I miss those things!!!!
