View Full Version : Four Roses; Single Barrel v Small Batch
So, in an unlikely place in NY, I found a Hirsch 16 (gold foil, i know i know), pappy 20, Russell's Reserve, and a few other interesting bottles for decent prices.
I also saw a Four Roses Single Barrel for about 46 bucks, and a Four Roses Small Batch for 38 bucks. Anyone have any preferences between the two Four Roses choices?
They're both delicious. I prefer the single barrel, but I know a lot of folks prefer the small batch. If you can afford them, get them both and try them side by side and make your own choice.
They seem to be running a little higher than KY prices, although, I suppose they gotta get it to NY somehow.............
I prefer the single barrel, but I've only had small samples of the small batch at a couple of tastings.
Why not consider a long weekend get-away to Kentucky? You can visit some distilleries and save a lot of money raiding some liquor stores.
The singel barrel is one half of the small batch. For example the small batch uses 2 yeast and high rye mash bill, where as the single barrel uses one yeast and high rye mash bill. IIRC single barrel is spicey yeast and small uses spicey and fruity yeast.
It's definitely on the planner- to bribe my wife with beautiful sites and horseback riding, and also distillery tours. :-) But we're headed overseas in the spring, and also trying to get to NO Jazzfest, so Kentucky may wait a bit... sigh.

Both are great but my preference is for the small batch.... it seems more complex and multidimensional.
