View Full Version : Bourbon in Ireland

My wife and I just returned from several days in Ireland. We frequented several pubs and hotel bars in Dublin, Cork, Waterford, and Killarney. I made a point to check the shelves for bourbon. Itís pretty bleak. Every pub and bar carried JBW and Black Jack. Interestingly, I would estimate that two-thirds of the establishments carried Southern Comfort. I saw no other American whiskey. I was told that Powers is the No. 1 seller in Ireland. Jameson is the top export. I tried Powers for the first time and thought it was a very nice sipping whiskey. Guinness Stout is the national drink of Ireland. Our tour guide told us that Guinness is served free in nursing homes and to nursing mothers in hospitals. Really. Guinness is pretty tasty fresh right out of the tap. My wife really liked Bulmers Cider.

Our tour guide told us this Irish joke:

An Irishman who had a little too much to drink is driving home from the city one night and, of course, his car is weaving violently all over the road.

A cop pulls him over. "So," says the cop to the driver, "where have ya been?" "Why, I've been to the pub of course," slurs the drunk.

"Well," says the cop, "it looks like you've had quite a few to drink this evening." "I did all right," the drunk says with a smile.

"Did you know," says the cop, standing straight and folding his arms across his chest, "that a few intersections back, your wife fell out of your car?"

"Oh, thank heavens," sighs the drunk.
"For a minute there, I thought I'd gone deaf."

Did you get any bottles of whiskey at any of the duty free stores? What was the selection of Irish whiskey like in duty free? Powers is an excellent Irish blend and is readily available in much of the US. It is quite good whiskey for the money!

They have a pretty good selection of Irish Whiskey in Duty Free. They basically have all of the standard lines from all of the makers. They usually have one or two Duty Free offerings as well.

There was a very nice selection of Irish at the Dublin Airport. They had the usual brands: Jameson (including single malts), Powers, Paddy, Tullamore Dew Single Malt, Bushmills (including the 16 yr.). They also had some less common brands: Cooley, Red Breast, Locke's, Contarf, Connemara, Killbeggan, Knappogue Castle, Midleton, Tyrconnell and a couple of others I had never heard of. Unfortunately, was had no more room in our carry-ons for even a single bottle. Poor planning on our part.
