View Full Version : A little love for Woodford Reserve

WR is one of my least favorite pours, one I only drink when I'm on a plane. To me it has a flavor like paint thinner with a little sugar added.
Last night I was having dinner with some friends and some WR was poured. I was amazed to discover how much this pour changed over time. After about thirty minutes in the glass the solvent aroma disappeared and a rich, malty flavor began to emerge. Granted, the taste was very one dimensional, but what was there was actually quite good. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I'm almost looking forward to my next plane trip.

For my first post here, I'll share the love. Been a longtime bourbon lover, Blanton's is currently my favorite pour. WR strikes me generally as unobjectionable, though I understand some object to the price. But, I must say, that from time to time, I've had WR because it was the only "quality" bourbon available, and really enjoyed it. In fact, I had a pour at the Cheesecake factory (while facing the usual horrendous wait), and it was remarkably excellent. I'm not sure that the specific bottling was the reason. Just the other night, I sampled WR side by side with some ETL and Weller's 107, and thought the WR was plain bad. I've enjoyed WR from that same bottle before. I suspect that WR does not pair well with other bourbons, and that could be one culprit behind the many negative reviews. I've experienced the same thing with some single malts and Belgium beers -- very good alone, very bad when sampled after something else.
