Wow, I have to admit I didn't like Sazerac Rye until I drank it in an OLD Fashioned. I ussually drink my bourbon neat when I am wanting to appreciate the bourbon and if I am just looking for a buzz I mix it with a splash of club soda and a splash of ginger. But I decided to venture out and try Manhattan's and Old Fashoined's. The Manhattan was not good but the Old Fahioned was okay. I was using Evan Williams 1783 at the time but decided to try it with my Saz just to see. I was blown away. To me it was the perfect mix. I was wondering if anyone else who drinks old fashioned's has experienced this with a rye like saz.

I've been singing the praises of both Baby Saz neat and as the perfect rye for an Old Fashioned for some time.

I usually drink neat as well but decided that I needed to branch out one weekend. I experimented with Manhattans. I tried several bourbons and Sazerac Rye and the Sazerac came out the winner. The bite of the rye seemed to mix with the sweet of the vermouth better than any of the bourbons that I used.
I'll have to try the Old Fashioned next. Care to share your recipe? From what I understand it is sugar, water, bitters, and booze and some use orange. Any tips you'd care to add?

I use one tablespoon water, three quarters of a teaspoon sugar and three to four drops of bitters; usually two drops of Angostura and two drops of Fee brothers.

I dissolve the sugar in the water and add the bitters and then add two ounces of whiskey, drop in an orange slice, slightly molest the orange slice, I don't muddle it, that releases too much juice from the orange. Add a nice big fat maraschino cherry and a handful of ice cubes, give it a good stir and enjoy.

I have experimented with using a bit of triple sec, something on the order of a quarter teaspoon and added a drop of Fee brothers west Indian orange bitters but I find with some whiskeys, particularly with Baby Saz and WT it is easy to overdo the orange theme. Weller Antique can take the additions better without coming off as overly orangie.

I put a teaspoon of sugar, couple dashes of biters, and a splash of club soda mix that together add a few ounces of whiskey and top with a few ice cubes. There you go perfect simplicity. Having one as we speak:grin:
