I pulled out my open bottle of EW 1783 10 year. I've tried to like this bourbon but I'm having a hard time doing so. It didn't sit well with me tonight. The finish is has some rough spots. To reward my due diligence, I broke open a new bottle of Early Times KSBW, distilled c.'75 and bottled '80. Much better.....

I started out the evening finishing off my bottle of ETL.

I went to the bunker and grabbed some OGD 114. This bottle is much better than the first, seems as if the cork is much tighter and it's not as acidic. Damn, I'm in love. For the price this stuff is fantastic and I think it's my benchmark for price/value/proof.

Yes sir, I'll take me some OGD 114 any day of the week. Time for a bulk purchase.

I AM jealous. I'm enjoying some 1996 EWSB. Nice stuff.

so am I! I found a bottle that was barreled 10-18-96 today, for 25.91 after tax. the shop had two bottles of 1997 and then, still in the box at the back of the shelf, this bottle. It is amazing whiskey. I didn't share Murray's view that the Elijah Craig was so exceptional- good, yes... but not that good. I hadn't found a heaven hill whiskey I really liked, but the personality of this whiskey blows me away. I've had several pours tonight, and was able to compare it to the basic Evan Williams. it's too bad that this was the only bottle of pre-1997 I could find in the town, as I would definitely by another bottle if I could. my daily drinker has been Eagle Rare Single Barrel, but I'd be very happy to mix it up with this Heaven hill.

This one was barreled 5/28/96. The 96's are getting increasingly scarce, as are the 97's. I haven't seen a 94 or 95 for years, except at the Bourbon Heritage Center. Last time I was there I almost asked to buy some of the bottles in the case behind the cashier.

The 2000 is supposedly the first made at Berheim in Louisville. Should be interesting to see how that compares to the previous years.

OFBB fall 1990-2003 before dinner, JDSS with the a bit spicy fried apples with vanilla ice cream for dessert and Stagg 2008 right now. I did have the dessert with a side by side of the JD and a calvados. Both my lady partner and me thought the Tennessee was superior.

The Russell’s reserve rye on the other hand is about the least good in the taste per buck devision you can get here. Very, very light and meaningless to a high price. Leif

Rough day at work. Came home and I'm unwinding with a pour of Old Forester BIB. Just what the Doctor ordered. Joe

Plan on cracking my first ever bottle of Wathen's tonight and will likely finish off a bottle of OGD BIB, so that I can clear a space in the cabinet for the OGD 114. Had a nice pork tenderloin for lunch today and had to accompany it with a small snort of VSOF (BHC). How could I not?

Redbreast 12. Obviously this is Irish whiskey, but since its mellowing for 12yrs in oak casks, presumably storing bourbon prior to the Redbreast, I believe it counts...

A long overdue pour of Buffalo Trace. Somebody smack me, if I run out of this again.

Consider yourself smacked!!!I made a special trip to Binny's before the price increase when I saw that I didn't have any BT in the bunker! It's a definite must have for me. :)

Ah! Like the old, Skin Bracer TVcommercial: "Thanks, I needed that!" :D

I say it won't happen again, but I didn't buy 2. Nice thinkin', Joey

I know what you mean. While the Russell's Reserve Rye is "pleasant" enough to drink, it comes off as somewhat bland at times, particularly if you've been drinking Rittenhouse Rye or something similar. I'll enjoy the rest of my RRR bottle but I doubt I'll replace it when it's gone.

Agreed. back when I was getting my whiskey tastes in order, my wife bought me a bottle of Buffalo Trace and Russel's Reserve Rye for my birthday. I've since found much better ryes, but that was my "gateway drug" into the world of rye whiskey, so it'll always have some sort of a special spot in my heart.

Some 1792 while watching Young Frankenstein on cable.

Even though we've seen it umpteen times, my wife and I found ourselves laughing out loud again. Boy, they must of had fun making that movie!

One of my favorite movies. "What hump?"

Me too. "That's Frahnkensteen."

Besides being hilarious, YF has a special place in my past, as it was the first movie I went to without my parents. Just me, and a couple of buddies from the neighborhood.

I have been enjoying some OGD86 pours the last few nights...

Tonight I am having the Beam Distillers Series 7yr 90 proof.

taste like KC light, which it is I believe.

Pretty darn good with a vanilla cream soda back.

Today's been one of those days where I truly meant to get a whole lot done but opted to just stop whatever I was doing and marvel at this beautiful late summer day. Just poured the last of my FR1B, a nice double. This is a project I can finish.

Cheers to all!

Amen, brother. We've been enjoying glorious weather here in Chicagoland too, perhaps the nicest string of days we've had all summer. Off to see the Chisox/Red Sox game tomorrow afternoon which is supposed to be beautiful too. Have a good weekend, folks!

Tonight its Buffalo Trace. I was going to make an Old Fashioned but that's too much trouble. All you really need is a bottle and a glass. I need to start keeping a few glasses in the same cabinet I keep the bottles. Having to get into two different cabinets is almost too much trouble.

The tradition continues. Each year for the past several years on the eve of the Football season I've opened a bottle of Lot B. Is this available in the 5 L size?

Man I like this stuff!

I think everybody in the neighborhood stopped by tonight. Sat in the garage and drank beer, discussed life, and watched the dogs run around. But, I am beered out. So, a nice pour of Old Charter 12 yr is very welcome right now. Very floral and sweet on the nose. Leather and dryness on the palate and finish. Talk about a dichotomy. There's a lot goin' on with this whiskey.
