Met with a couple friends this evening and sampled the newest DC Willett releases; 3, 6 and 7 year old bourbons. The 3 year surprised me as it wasn't edgy as one would expect from a very young bourbon plus at 123 pf, it had good flavor. Also on the table this evening:

FRSB 2009 LE

FRSB Angel Share (Julio's)

Castle Old Taylor, not sure of the year

'95 OWA - SW, need I say more

'02 OWA - little woody on the nose and palate but pleasant nonetheless

'04 OWA - terrific nose, nice balance, very tasty

'05 OWA - good also but not as good as the '04

'07 OWA, 9 yr single barrel non chill, a little flat on the palate but still good

Charles X Cognac Petite Champagne - just to mix things up a little. Great nose of pears and melon, very tasty cognac.

Not drinking yet as it's 5am but my wife and I are closing on a house that has been a lot of work for us both.

We plan on celebrating by opening a bottle of VWFRR.

That's a great reason to pop open the VWFRR, Tom. Congratulations!

Congratulations Tom! Did you buy in the city or a neighboring community? It's such a relief after the papers are finally signed and you're past all the closing nonsense. Now you can concentrate on making a "home" for your family. Good luck!

P.S.--Your wife is on board for drinking rye? I failed in my attempt to get my wife to drink bourbon when she turned her nose up to WT American Honey. It sure would make my life easier if she shared my enthusiasm for whisk(e)y.

VWSR12 Lot B

OGD114

ORVW10

the ORVW10 appears to be bottled in 08.

There is this odd although awesome ice cream taste in the finish.

Call me crazy but I think I prefer the ORVW10 over the Lot B right now!

So damn smooth (and creamy)!

I'm sure this will all change once the two bottles open up.

A last taste of my blended straight bourbons before presentation to the Gazebo table Saturday night. Gosh it is good. It ended up with about 40% 1988 bonded Gran-dad. Half of the rest was Bulleit and Four Roses 120th, and the last half mixed straights (some Tennessees, some WR including Sweet Mash 1838, some Clermont Beam) - plus a touch of old Venezuelan rum to finish and knit.

Caution: to anyone who tastes this Saturday night, ensure your palate is fresh. It is rounded and deep like an old brandy - its subtleties may be lost if the palate was overloaded earlier by heavy char and other rich flavours.

It sounds terrific, Gary. Looking forward to trying it. However, I can't guarantee what condition my palate is going to be in, by that time. :D

Oops I forgot - and 10% of it is four straight ryes not less than 18 years old. So adjust those numbers accordingly please. The ryes are: ORVW 13 (but 18 or more when bottled, mine was a recent one); Hirsch 21 year old rye; BMH 18 year old rye; and another one, can't remember!

Weller 107 and Forester Signature, 3:2, rocks. And it rocks. :) In our hotel room in Louisville, just arrived after a long trip. Can't make it to B'town tonight to participate in BTOTY '09. Will see the group tomorrow night.

I've been alternating between OGD 100 and WT Rye 101. Lately I've been preferring the taste of the WT. It floods my sinuses with a flavor that I sort of want to call brown sugar.

I just cracked my first ever bottle of Fighting Cock and I am well pleased with this one. I passed it over in the past because of it's gimmicky look, but there are several favorable reviews on this site.

For a $13 bottle at 6 years and 103 proof, it's a real value on a tasty drink! Better start hoarding this stuff next time it's on sale.

Tonight, my wife is cooking a nice Fall supper of chicken and rice with mushroom gravy, and mixed vegetables. I am having a pre-dinner drink of Old Forester Signature on the rocks. Ummmm. :yum:

OCPR, neat. Smells of caramel and browned butter with a hint of leather. Overall a very nice pour. Very sweet on the tongue, much sweeter than I was expecting then some spice. Balanced finish, not too bitter with a lingering sweetness. Thumbs up.

I had OFBB 2007 before dinner, VWFRR I with the coffee after and Cadenheads uncut HH 15 later in the night yesterday. The birthday bourbon has grown on me. Very fruity and refreshing and a perfect aperitif whiskey indeed!

Watching the Bears / Steelers game...halftime...decided to pull out some W.L. Weller Special Reserve. It has a little bite on the finish...dropped in one cube to open it up a bit....maybe that was a mistake...seems to have increased the wood notes ..odd, normally I find a small ice allows sweetness to show up...I think this one is better neat.

I celebrated a Bears victory with a pour of WTRR 10/90...nice stuff there!

I'm going to have a bit more of this WTKS from Halloween 02. Totally different pour then the new stuff. Sadly, I had to put it in a plastic bottle in checked baggage for 10 hours and back in the bottle upon arrival home. It picked up a very SLIGHT odd taste, but I'm really glad I got to bring it back home. Weird to know exactly where I was all day when it was bottled...
