I'm working my way though a bit of the McKenzie rye by Finger Lakes Distilling. This is aged in quarter casks and finished in local sherry barrels.

The color is a light reddish brown and is much darker than I would have imagined for a "young" rye.

Initially, the nose has a lot of graininess and the yeasty/white-doggy youth that one would expect, but if you dig in a bit the early barrel influence comes through as a burnt sugar sweetness mixed with black tea.

There's quite a bit of rye tingle and on entry and some black tea dryness, but not in a tannic/oaky way. The rye character disappears quickly and the yeasty finish says that it is closer to white dog than what the color would lead you to believe. That hint of sweetness and barrel influence on the nose never really appears on the palate and that's disappointing.

The flavors that I enjoy the most in American whiskey come from the barrel, but this is quirky enough to be a pleasant pour for me. Serving this at a tasting prior to the 3yo Willett bourbon that Party Source sells would be a great way to show the progression of what the wood and char really add to the mix.

I'm having my first dram of ORVW 107. I think I might like it better than the 12 yo Lot B.

EC12, still trying to polish off this not-very-good bottle. A dash or three from the bitters bottle seems to help it out a lot.

Ox - I have a bottle of this and quirky is right. I've actually vatted this with other Rye's and it's turned out pretty well. I'm not a fan of ultra young whiskey's so with something like this, I'll vat it with something that has more age on it to balance it out. I would like to see Finger Lakes offer something a bit older to tamp down the youth.

4 Roses Yellow

4 Roses Single Binny OBSK

Handy 09

The first two I acquired thanks to an OX and a MULE respectively. It's good to have animal friends.

Not bad a bad lineup. Not bad at all.

Tonight I started off with Knob Creek SB (Buchemi's bottle), JBB, then moved on to ORVW 10/107. Feelin' a little toasty. Hope the wife doesn't go into labor tonight.

I finished a 750 of EW1783 with my father this evening while grilling. no mishaps. Have since gotten a ride home with my girlfriend on her way home from the pool hall, don't ask, and now i'm trying my best to finish a bottle of Bernheim Wheat. Lovely.

I did have WT 12 gold folio before dinner yesterday followed by EC 12 with the ice-cream with chocolate souse (some of the same in the souse as well) and nuts for dessert and WTRR 101 as a night cap. Defiantly more wood in the RR than the gold despite a lower age statement. Both are very good though.

Old Charter Louisville 80prf, neat, you don't dare add more water to this.

Willam Larue Weller. Somehow it tastes sweeter when you only pay $52 for it.

Hannah & Hogg BIB distilled by Heaven Hill DSP 31-no UPC code but in tamper proof metric bottle... dark juice with tons of mint, banana and corn sweet goodness. Finishing up with OGD 114.

LotB

OGD 114

The 114 has had a ton of air and it's soo good. Diaphanous brown sugar notes.

Hey, anybody know if that would have been from the pre-fire Heaven Hill Distillery?

If it was distilled and not just bottled at 31, it would be pre=fire HH.

I had some 114 last night too, its quickly making its way up there as a favourite.

That makes it before the fire. Although I'm wondering where that barrel was aging since it wasn't bottled until 2002.

Actually, my bottle that was barreled 4/8/99 still has a back label reading, "distilled in Kentucky by D.S.P. KY 31. bottled by H. McKenna Distillery, Bardstown, Kentucky D.S.P. KY 31," although I'm pretty sure no distilling was happening at 31 in 99. Someone here (maybe Chuck?) said they probably got some special dispensation from the TTB to use up the old labels, but that doesn't sound quite right.

At the risk of being wrong yet again on an HH-related issue...

IIRC, not all of the warehouses burnt down in the fire, so it very well could have been aged in Bardstown. OR...maybe they were continuing to use dsp 31 for stuff aged at warehouses at other locations.

We were talking about this issue last week, seems all the McKenna are 31/31. Strange...

Sgtgto was in town so couldn't pass up an opportunity to get a small gathering together and enjoy some bourbon and food.

It was a light drinking night for me but I enjoyed a couple of the following:

FRSB 100th

ER 10/101

Weller Cent

There was a full line up of various Willetts as well as all the Staggs but it was a wimpy night for me. I added my own bottles to the lineup with:

'78 Benchmark

'81 Old Taylor 86pf

OC 12

Binny's Weller 12

'82 Jim Beam White

Early 80's I.W. Harper 86 pf

'86 JTS Brown 86pf

It was a very pleasant evening (thanks RB) and enjoyed meeting Jake.

Stopped in a store that I hadn't been to before and there was a local rep in there talking to the owner about ordering some Maker's 46...I told them that I had been looking for a bottle of that and he offered me a taste. I have to say that while it is better then regular MM it still isn't worth the $35 that they're asking for it. I would take ORVW 10/107 for $4 bucks less every day of the week. I'm going to have to revisit it as it was out of a plastic shot glass and was pretty warm as it had been in the rep's car all day. I hope my second experience with it is better as the first one was really hot...literally and figuratively! :(

Well Bob, I know you have a bottle because I see it in your "Random bottles" pic in your post to "show us your stash". What, is that bottle for display purposes only?

Knob Creek on one rock.

I haven't had KC in awhile and I now can recall how much I appreciate this pour. I have come to tell new bourbon drinkers to remember words about this Beam product that were given to me early. 100 proof, 9 years old and still under $25 here in SoCal.

Please spare me how much cheaper it is elsewhere...
