What bourbon are you drinking? - Spring 2011

Sipping on some tax stamped, Louisville Weller Special Reserve. Early 80's, I'm guessing? We've all heard of some "newer/current" iterations of some bourbons being of lesser "quality" than their "older" iterations....OGD, Old Fitz, Old Forester, etc. etc. come to mind. Well, I've not always agreed with the consensus of those opinions, but, IMO, you can put the WSR at the top of that "sh!$" list. The Louisville has gone from a full, rich, chewy, caramely, whiskey.....to the nearly odorless, tasteles, finishless, bland dud, of the current iteration. IMO, of course. And, here's the kicker...the L'ville is NAS!!!! When's the last time you heard, "Ever since they added the age statement, the whiskey has gone to crap!"

The weird thing is...and, I can't figure it out....I love the current Weller 107...:crazy:

Last night a nice size pour of Woodford Reserve that I have had sitting around in the back of the cabinet for a couple of years. Tasted really good even though my expectations were not that high.

Speaking of Beam and bowling, I picked up an 8 year old tax stamped Beam in a clear glass "bowling pin" bottle this weekend at an estate sale (along with some other dusties--Old Taylor, Walker's Deluxe (1965) and more) but I'm having trouble dating the Beam. If I can figure out how to work our new camera I'll throw some pictures up.

I had the exact same experience not long ago with my back-of-the-cabinet bottle of Woodford Reserve. It really was quite nice and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Tonight has been a 1995 WTRB, FRSB, Weller 107 Antique SB from Kenwood Liquors and ending with Mount Gay Extra Old Rum (well it is aged in used bourbon barrels and holds its own at 86 proof). I'm enjoying a brief break from a brutal work week which continues tomorrow and prevents me from attending the whisky (their spelling) tasting events in town.

Late night for me. Celebrating a long week of traveling for my Pappy haul with some ORVW 107, then had Lot B, now working on a nice big pour of PVW15. Gonna wrap it up w/ some Founders Breakfast Stout. I brainfarted and forget to get some in Dec and with it being seasonal it all disappeared....but, 60 miles from home while tracking down some Pappy I did as I always do and checked for it, but this time I actually found a few 4 packs of it on the shelf and grabbed them. Looking forward to that one.

Old Forest Signature. It's the first pour of the bottle, so it's a touch hot, but a fine whiskey, neat (how I started) or on the rocks. I've got a couple of bottles of OFBIB from the 1970's, and you can definitely note the family resemblance over the years.

BHC Weller Centennial Louisville i found earlier today....I'm officially back on the bourbon wagon after this find. deep, rich, floral, caramel, cherry, wee touch of leather, slight vanilla mixed with just enough wood.
