What bourbon are you drinking? - Spring 2011

On my way home I had to make a stop to pick up some groceries for dinner. On my way in there's a small package store and the bar had 2 bottles of High West (BouRye and Rendevous). Since I had not yet had the privilege of either, I decided to try the BouRye tonight. It was good, definitely different, although I had a tough time distinguishing the flavors, although the finish seemed to be all rye for me with some solid spice at the end of each sip. I would definitely order it out again, just don't think I would go out of my way to stock up.

Sipping on some Kentucky XO tonight. The first couple of glasses had been disappointing, but is starting to come on in a good way.

It's helping to take the edge of my last bill I just got from my stucco guy. Ouch!

Light day at work tomorrow, so I decided to do a quality tri-rye night. Started with Rittenhouse BiB neat, then 2010 Handy (with a generous splash of water), and capped it off with a healthy pour of the Hirsch 22 y/o.

Handy was probably my favorite (balances a healthy dose of spice with an underlying sweetness better than any other rye, IMO), but I still really enjoyed the other two as well. I have a weakness for well aged ryes like the Hirsch (love that sweet, oaky chewiness), and I appreciate that I know I can stay well stocked on the always good Ritt Bond.

All-in- all, 3 great ryes. Twas a fun night!

I had a few different pours tonight...here's what I started with:

Kirkland's Premium Small Batch (first time trying this - definitely spicy and will be a good mixer - not sure how much I'll drink on it's own...it might be good with ice)

AAA 10 Star (very underwhelming tonight - sometimes I get a taste of sweet vanilla - tonight was just a weak alcohol burn)

Having a pretty decent size pour of PVW20. Got quite a few in the bunker now so when I'm in the mood I don't feel bad about having a nice big pour of it.

Finished last evening up with a pour of a Willett 18YO wheater.... needed something to kill the pain of my wife watching Dancing with the Stars!!! It worked at 132.8PF!!

Had what will probably be the 2nd to last pour of OGD114 bottle. I'd say OGD114 is one of those bottles where each pour just gets better and better, until its gone

I had the house bottling of uncut 4 Roses (I forgot the letter combination) at Bourbon bistro yesterday and WRMCMW as a night cap before bad. Both were pretty good, but I do slightly prefer the seasoned oak before the maple.

Had a beautiful pour of VSOF 12 (BHC) last night. There's about one more pour left in the bottle but another full one in the bunker, so I may kick the open one tonight. I really love this bourbon!

It's been a long time between sipping sessions due to work and other craziness, but on Sat. night I sat down with the stereo and a pour of Willett Reserve, OCPR (slope shoulder) which I've really come to appreciate and ETL. The Willett is a little hot to me. It may not be the best starter but when I think about it I associate it with a highly carbonated cola for some reason. It's a little funny that the memory association is so different from the real-time sipping. Anyhow, the OCPR and ETL have been my favorite back-to-back pours of late.

I've only had it a few times (one of which while I was feeling under the weather), but so far I've been less then impressed by it. While I realize that I haven't given it a fair shot yet, there are just other bottles I always seem to end up grabbing.

There's nothing wrong with that, if you've got more favorites on hand then reach for one of those. When you get time I do recommend the EC12, I've only given it one or two samplings so far, but I liked those, but I suppose I could give it a deeper look to see what, if any, nuances I pick up from it.

I had some EC 12 myself this afternoon in a Glencairn, and wow, that nose was just everything an old bourbon should be.

OGD 114. I can never say a bad word about Beam, simply because of this whiskey. If I have in the past, I apologize...The 114 is a spectacular bourbon, at a ridiculously affordable price.

Regular Buffalo Trace and loving it! Is that one of the most unique flavors in a bourbon or what?
