Just sitting at the computer enjoying several pours of AAA 10 year old. I really like this bourbon. It's a good easy going whiskey that you can get for $17.99.

In order over the past two hours:

  • EWSB 1999 -- better than I remember
  • Willets Family Pot Still -- worse than I remember, though I hadn't had it neat before. Nice nose, but tasted bitter/woody to me
  • Weller's 12 year -- on first impression, definitely in my top quartile
  • ORVW 10-107 -- delicious as always. So far this is the only VW I've tasted, and it's great. Can't wait to try my Lot B, 15 and 20 in coming months/years

Long term, I expect that I'll be a $30-and-under guy. Very happy to know there are great offerings like these last two out there at this price point.

Started with PHC10 (124.2) and finished up with Stagg '10. Whoa, that's a lot of proof, and it snuck up on me given the drinkability of the two. I'll have to be more careful in the future.

Hit an unopened bottle of Weller Centennial last night and it was a real knockout. I'm gonna stretch this bottle as long as I can, that's for sure.

I had a big pour of OGD114 last night/this morning. If I started drinking at midnight, does that count as last night because it was before I went to sleep? Or does it count as today?

Had a pour of OWA while cooking some pork chops this evening. This was my second pour and while it was better than the first, I still picked up some ethanol notes that were a little off-putting.

Moved onto EC12 afterward eating and once again, found some off notes in the bottle. I can't find the exact words for it, perhaps this is what is meant when tasting notes say "earthy." I'm leaning towards "musty" myself though.

Sipping on some OWA again. Contemplating on what I should crack open next.

I had a tequila enthusiast friend over for dinner and ran him first through a sampling of Binny's Weller 12, ORVW 107 and a single barrel OWA. We then cleansed the palate with a single barrel BT and proceeded into a 85 Ezra Brooks, 93 WT 101 and for the finale, 09 Stagg. I think I'm close to making him a convert.

Having a pour of EC12 myself, and it seems to be somewhat degrading as its been opened, initially I really liked it, but now upon another pour I find it to be a bit medicinal and not as smooth as I remember it being. I don't know if I pick up much earthiness, as much as I see it as underwhelming overall. This bottle may stick around a while (full).

Tonight I'm going to have several pours of Old Charter 10 year old. It's an easy going bourbon that I can enjoy without putting a lot of thought into. I would love to stumble onto some 12 year old but so far no go.
