Hey Jeff,

Some here have said that they don't really care for the higher-proof OGD. What is your impression?

Have you tried the Weller 19 year old? I like it very much. Linn and others aren't as impressed but, they are rye guys.

Well, I guess with a definite quantity of this stuff available, I am going to have to bite the bullet a pick some up. I'll let you know when I do. Do you liken it to the style of say Weller 12yo or the Antique? Funny how I adore the 12yo but detest the 107 proof. I don't know if it is a function of age or proof, but if it is age, the 19 ought to be just fine!

I havent had the 12 year yet, next time I got to a reds game it is on the list to get. I think of it as more in the line of Weller Centennial. Less fruity that Weller 7/107 and more obvious caramel/vanilla/molasses, with a good does of woodiness, but in a very good way!

Hey Murph,

I'm so tickled to see the Weller 19 finally getting the play it deserves. Actually, I'm glad to see this renewed interest in wheaters.

CL,

I checked out the site, they sure make a case for the empty decanter... smirk.gif

I have to ask ya'll (and I realize there will be those of you that wonder when I'll be getting a life, but I swear it was on my first click, just a random thing... crazy.gif ) Anyway...what the hell is that thing in the lower right hand corner of page 75 in their 'Showcases'? It's wearing a red jacket, and humping something better discussed in other forums... smirk.gif Does anyone have any idea who actually bottled something that looked like that? grin.gifgrin.gif

Just curious,

Bj

P.S. I64 will take you from Charleston, thru Lexington and up to Louisville. It doesn't run to Lebanon. Could you be thinking of Hwy. 68? That's a really cool scenic drive, and you pass right by Gravel Switch...home to some of my heritage... grin.gif

Old Fitz BIB -- the last of my second bottle.

You may recall that I found my first bottle undrinkable. The finish literally made me gasp.

Either I've gone from wuss to hardened drinker in one year's time, or I had a tainted bottle before. Based on the second bottle I'd call this a no nonsense, working man's (or woman's) bourbon -- a little rough at the finish, but with a very appealling nose and palate. Nevertheles, I still prefer the 1849, which sells for the same price at my favorite local liquor store.

(I really intended to do a one-on-one with EWSB '92 and Henry McKenna SB today, but I decided I wanted to relax, not concentrate on flavor elements and descriptive terms.)

Yours truly,

Dave Morefield

My mistake on a Lebanon on 64. I thought I had seen such a sign on 64 a while back, but obviously I didn't!

Beej, before you say that it's us that keeps drawing all the dirty pictures, You've got a dirty mind! That almost makes me want to drive over and have a look for myself. That is at Lebanon Jct, instead of Lebanon. I65 exit 106 or so.

I totally love the Weller 19 yo. I also love the Van Winkles. They're all great wheaters! I find it interesting that someone would disparage the Weller 19 yo because Julian took a pass on the barrels. The flavor of the Weller 19 is definitely different from the Van Winkles...not necessarily better or worse, just different. A little drier, and woodier. Maybe the reason Julian passed on these barrels is not because they're not great whiskey, but because they didn't fit the particular taste profile he was looking for in the Van Winkles. If you're looking for a Picasso, you would probably take a pass on a Rembrandt. Anyway, if you haven't tried the Weller 19, I strongly recommend it, before it's all gone! It's my favorite bourbon at the moment. I've already bunkered my supply.

While trying to clear some room in my bunker, and I use the word loosely, I decided to finish off the last of a bottle of Heaven Hill 6yo BIB. It has been a while since I have had any of this, but I remember thinking it was better than I had expected, and it is again. Getting some powerful corn notes with a good dose of leather and hay. Kind of smells like a freshly mowed lawn. Really good bourbon for the price; about $7 here in Lexington.

Sh*t! This post almost rolled over to page 2. What's up with you all! shocked.gif

Tonight is Weller Centennial. I love this stuff. This is even more refreshing as it is my first drink in five days (losing weight). I wish I could get Centennial here in NC. The bottle I have is from my trip to Sam's about a month ago.

I need to do a side-by-side with the Centennial and the Weller 19 yo I got a couple weeks ago in WV. I have a feeling, though, the Centennial would win because of its unique flavor. But, that's not a given. When I put it side by side with the 19 yo, who knows?

Be careful with that "side by side" stuff.

I did it with Kentucky Spirit and WT 12 y/o during the Super Bowl, and Kentucky Spirit has never seemed quite as good as it once did ever since.

The real problem there is that the supply of the superior (to my taste) bourbon is finite.

Basically I'm too cheap to remove the shrink wrap from the pewter stopper in my one and only bottle of KS. I did make good on a few good chugs of it with Jimmy Russell himself a few weeks ago. I like the 12 YO better. And now for the nugget, Jimmy says it is even more finiter than before. " There's not much of the 12 yo left " says Jimmy. So I guess we need to acquire a taste for Russells Reserve. smirk.gif

Old Weller 12 yo, my first bottle, bought this afternoon at Liquor Barn on Hurstborne Lane in L'ville. I am in town to help out the family and, even though I put Liquor Barn way down on my list, my relatives took me there first cuz they know me all too well. laugh.gif I've only had a few sips so far, but I do like it. I taste a resemblence to the Weller Centennial, which is a very good thing.

I also picked up Weller Centennial, my first bottle of Old Charter Classic 90 12 yo, Wathens, BT, and, of course, ORVW 10 yo. Of course I wanted to buy more, but we'll see how much I can take back on the plane with me. crazy.gif

Interesting that you are having your first taste of Weller 12yo while I was having my first taste of the Centennial. So far so good! Nice body and flavor, though I think I might like this on a littler better at say 90 proof vs 100.

Old Forester 100 proof. I was reading back over some of my previous posts and came upon one where I declared this bourbon to be my favorite. Well, a lot has happened since then (i.e. Stagg, Birthday Bourbon, Pappy), but this is still one of the great bargain treasures of the bourbon world. Definately in my top 10, maybe even 6 or 7.

Drinking with the wife tonight and watching that Rumrunner's show on the History Channel. We've been switching around between Basil Hayden's, Elijah Craig 12 YO, Four Roses yellow label, and Ezra Brooks 15YO Single Barrel. She can't keep up with the high proof stuff yet, but tonight my winner by far was the Ezra Brooks SB 15 YO. Marvin, you've got great tastes. wink.gif

Pappy 20 yo! I am visiting relatives in L'ville and working during the day from my company's local branch office in L'ville. The other guys in the office and I went out for lunch on Monday at Harper's on Hurstbourne Lane, just north of I-64. What a bourbon selection! I saw the selection behind the bar on the way to our table. Normally, I don't drink at lunch, but this was too good an opportunity to pass up.

I went (I thought) straight to the top. Pappy 20 yo. The waitress said they recently had a tasting there and that she really liked the 12 yo. Now, this is what I call service. I was floored. I am not used to wait staff that know bourbon, even in KY.

After she brought my drink, she mentioned that they also had the 23 yo. I was only having one drink, so I said, I'd get the 23 yo on my next trip. She said that Harper's (where we were) and the Oak Room in the Seelback Hotel in L'ville were the only places in town that had it.

She also mentioned that Harper's and the Oak Room had a friendly competition to see who had the best bourbon selection. I told her to get one up on the Oak Room and get a bottle of the Sam's Pappy. shocked.gif Then I realized I should not have told her so Bourbonians can buy more. But, heck, she was cute and I wasn't thinking straight. smirk.gif

As I type, Evan Williams Single Barrel just purchased today. It's been a while since I enjoyed it. In the cupboard, WT Kentucky Spirit, Beam Black, Elijah Craig 12 YO, OGD BIB.

Old Commonwealth -- my third drink from this bottle. (Thanks to Julian for the info that this is the same as ORVW 10/107, albeit at an even more attractive price. I couldn't resist adding a couple of bottles to my last order from Binny's.)

My first two drinks from this bottle were in the evening, and I was disappointed; the experience just wasn't as enjoyable as I remembered the ORVW bottling to be. This afternoon the taste is both familiar and quite enjoyable.

I used to label some milder bourbons as "afternoon" drinks. Now I'm beginning to believe that I appreciate all bourbon more in the afternoon. Fortunately I am free to rearrange my daily schedule around my drinking preferences. grin.gif
