With a feeling of true thankfulness, I am enjoying a pour of a newly opened bottle of WT American Spirit, on this Veteran's Day. If you are a Vet, and are reading this, I am tipping my glass to you in gratitude for your service.

Hear, hear!

I'm raising a glass of Rock Hill Farms in honor of the brave women and men who fought in the battle of Rock Hill.

OK, there wasn't a battle of Rock Hill. But I'm still raising my glass to those who served in real battles and in peacetime. Happy Veteran's Day all!

As 11-11-11 is my birthday at 11:11 AM I had a pour of George T Stagg 2011 to celebrate. Tonight I am having several pours of Abraham Bowman Bourbon Barrel #5 with a good cigar.

Last night I had Bowman 18yr TPS #1, ND OGD 114 1981 Lot 1, and Old Fitz 90pr 1981...man that ND OGD 114 is rediculous!

A decent pour of OWA.

I prefer indecent pours of OWA myself.

Enjoying some 2008 OFBB right now. I know the 2007 is more popular but between the two, I prefer this one hands down.

My daughter and her husband went to graduate school at South Carolina so, naturally, I am having some Fighting Cock while the Gamecocks take on the 'Gators of Florida. FC and USC, both winners!

Just had a small tasting. My woman has a far better palette than I, so I set up a small blind tasting for her. The good news is that she loves the smell of bourbon and will take small tastes to give her opinion, but doesn't drink any bourbon beyond that. So, I get to finish all of the tasting pours once she is finished. This being VW fall allocation time, I based the tasting on VW.

#1 PVW 15

#2 ETL

#3 VWFRR13

#4 lot B

With each one she smelled through them a few times, then a small taste of each. Then I added a drop or two of water to each, maybe 3 or 4 drops in the Pappy 15 to even the proof a bit. Then she went through the process again. All I can say is that she nailed it. Her opinions of aroma and flavor were a combination of my opinions and those of the masses here on SB without any real prior knowledge of said opinions. Her rankings:

1. Pappy 15

2. VW Rye 13

3. almost 2A- lot B

4. ETL

She liked them all, not a bad one in the bunch. Now, I get to complete the tasting so to speak. I'm not a straight rye fan, but I have to admit, the VWFRR is damn good. The aroma is incredible,it takes a few minutes to open up, maybe the drop of water helped, but then it is amazing. I just like the richness and seemingly bigger mouthfeel of the bourbon. ETL is a standby, not much close in its pricerange in my opinion. As for the two VW bourbons, it depends on mood, I love them both. I know that most rank the 15 higher than the 12, but there is a polished sense with the 12 that I dont quite get in the 15, although it has more complexity and boldness than the 12.

I don't believe that you can go wrong with any of these four. Now to try and find more of the VW offerings...

While reading through the WT 101 Rye vs Russell's Reserve Rye thread over in the Rye Forum, I realized I had a few bottles of various Wild Turkey bourbons that had been open for a while. Each had about one pour left in them so I decided to have a Wild Turkey bourbon vertical tasting: Russell's Reserve 10yo bourbon, WT Kentucky Spirit, and WT Rare Breed.

I had forgotten how much I really like Wild Turkey bourbon!

Tomorrow night it will be the WT ryes.

Ended up going over to a neighbors house to watch the ND game...I took with some sample bottles to finish up. Had some EBSG McKenna 2010, FRSB Kenwood Liquors, Weller Special Reserve 2007, Cork and Bottle OWA, and 2011 Weller 12. The two Weller pours definitely aren't as good as the others...

Starting with some Old Forester 100 proof. The more I drink this stuff the more I like it, and I started off liking it pretty good. This bottle says made at Brown Foreman, the other two I have say the Old Forester Distilling Co, interested to see how they differ/stay the same.

I think I'll move on to a Weller 12 after this though, while I watch the Walking Dead.

Tonight I drank the WT 101 rye and Russell's Reserve rye in a back to back comparison. I still like them both with the WT 101 rye edging out the RR rye. Then a revisit of the Michter's US*1 rye to finish off the long opened dusty bottle. Not too impressed considering there are other really good ryes that are out now.

Concerning your "Michter's" disappointment, let's remember that not all LDI is created equal.
