And I do actually have a topic-relevant question here addressed to you or anyone; given my situation described above, are these mid-shelf options (EC12, ER10, FRsmB, etc.) really worth 2X the low and low-mid stuff that I am used to (WSR 7, WT101, BT, etc.)? In other words, is the better stuff good enough to be worth buying less whiskey, which my budget would demand? I realize that what is worth it to one man is not worth it to another, and the whole process from beginning to end is subjective, blah blah blah, but can somebody give me a straight (not necessarily definitively correct) answer? Even if it is only their personal take on the issue?

I would say based on your budget, but also your desire to expand your palate then:

Yes to FRSmB, I would add ETL, ewsb and OWA.

No to ER10 but it is a SB so maybe a better one out there, the last EC12 I had wasn't as good as the first bottle, but the first bottle was delicious and actually jump started my obsession. The BT is a great value pour in IMO. I have not had WSR so no opinion on it.

You know the drill: whatever works for you. I hope this helps!

Nicely done, nicely done.

Really, I can only respond with something cliche but obviously true, like "it takes one to know one" or "come on, I'm not THAT bad" - neither of which would help me very much.

My hat is off to you, sir. Keep on with your noble task of keeping all of us bullshitters straight.

My answer is, it depends. It is probably the same as you have heard before, if you like them, it is worth it. As for me the items in the range you talking about that are worth it to me:

4RSmB

4RSB

W12

EC12

I do not really enjoy the ER10 that you mentioned so not worth it to me. Best thing to do is grab 50ml sizes for ones that are available or give a shot at a bar.

I found a reasonably rare (but I seem to be finding it more and more readily available) new bourbon called "Pedantic." It keeps sitting there on the shelf staring at me but the $.02 price tag is just too exorbitant. I'll have to pass.

Passed up on some Four Roses Single Barrel at barrel proof. The label was gold and I'm not sure whether or not it was some special edition or just something for Liquor Barn.

If they are like the releases at Binnys's or Party Source, they are barrel strength releases of each of Four Roses' ten recipes.

The Liquor Barn that I frequent in Louisville has the OBSK barrel proof as their private selection. It's mighty tasty.

ER 17yr 2009 and a Handy of unknown year, didn't look to close at the proof.

Plus a bunch of Dickel Barrel select, it seemed to be everywhere-one place had it at close out at $28. Good Deal from the few times I've seen it.

EC18 Pvt Barrel Selection...but still sitting on the fence. Not necessarily the price of $50 which is great deal for 18yo bourbon. It is more of the mixed results thru the years experienced by many folks here. I've had EC12 several times but never more than a solid poor for the price.

Maybe I should quit haggling about $50 in my head & just roll the dice. Plus, being a pvt selection, probably safer & less chance of being too woody. One of the guys on the selection 'committee' said it was closer to 20 yrs than 18. Perhaps I best grab one before all gone...lol.

Headed out soon to a store that has very low & dwindling supplies of all things bourbon & rye, like most in my area. I know what's there, just have figure out what to bring home. As usual, due to finances, will have to pass up something. So, help me decide:

A) 3 bottles of Saz 18, 2008 release (go figure - why is it still there?)

OR

B) 4R 2011 LE1B, 4R 2011 SmB, THH 2011, Weller 12

I'd go 2 Saz 18 and the 4R 2011 LE1B ... I know that wasn't a choice, but why can't you combine? THH, Weller 12, and 4R SmB you are more likely to find down the road ...

PVW 23 for $240. Best price in the area. Not sure I need the whiskey, but that black felt bag would really be a feather in my cap.

Michter's 10 year old bourbon for $83. First time I've ever seen it. I'm not sure why it is so expensive.

 Only in my dreams could I come across PVW for 300+ let alone 240.

Call me a trader, but I have 30+ year old scotches calling my name in that price range, and those are the cheap ones. Pappy 23 is low on my totem of what to spend $240 on.

Yes! I adore Ellen much more than I like Pappy. It is too bad that neither is a cheap date and they both play hard to get.

IMHO you'd be happier buying a bottle of Lot B and putting it in a black felt bag. Hell, for that price you could buy a really nice decanter and maybe even a wooden box to put it all in. :slappin:

I'm a big fan of the Pappy line, but I've never thought PVW23 was worth the $$$.

Passed on Weller 12. Not particularly noteworthy, other than the fact that I've never seen it on the shelves here in Georgia before today. But, I have enough in inventory, and I don 't really care for it (I know, that makes little sense). However, I was still tempted to grab a bottle just to say I could...

I wouldn't mind seeing it make it up here to Massachusetts; I can find Weller SR and OWA, but no Weller 12.
