Paradox
I dont hate EC12 enough to give it away, even though my dad has my bottle right now... I just don't find anything 'special' about it like I do with the EWSB Vintage's.

bluesbassdad
EC18 (three oz.), cheap red vermouth (one oz.), Angostura bitters (three dashes) and four ice cubes (Arrowhead water, frozen yesterday).I am reminded of the pronouncement by the author (David Embury) of my one and only book on mixed drinks, to the effect that eight to one is the ideal ratio of spirits to modifiers in most, if not all, mixed drinks (provided one uses spirits that one would willingly drink straight). In truth, I think this drink would benefit from a slightly smaller proportion of vermouth, which all but dominates the flavor. If I had started with, say, Jim Beam white, I wouldn't be able to taste the bourbon at all.Next time, I'll try a half ounce of vermouth, which would yield a ratio of six to one.Yours truly,Dave Morefield
Dave_in_Canada
Don't forget, I'm talking about the '90. I haven't had the pleasure to try any of the recent bottlings. The '90 is a pleasurable pour for a sunday afternoon, but it doesn't knock my socks off... that's what I need at the end of a hard day at the office! jeff
Woodford Reserve. I have been a critic of this bourbon in the past. I have enjoyed OF just as much...even slightly more than WR. Well, for the moment I am finding WR quite enjoyable. Seems sweeter to me than before. Interesting that I now find OF100 somewhat hot and dry and now I find WR smooth and sweet. Makes me wonder what's going on at Brown-Foreman.
ratcheer
Jeff, I have always perceived Woodford Reserve as sweet and smooth. Its one of my favorites, for sure. I like OF, too (especially the 100 proof), but I strongly prefer WR.I'm not sure its worth $30, but on the other hand, I wouldn't want to live without it.Tim
jeff
In the past WR has tasted, to me, somewhat harsh and dry. OF100 was more full-flavored and smooth. Not to mention, half the price Lately OF 100 has seemed hot and harsh, both to me and CL. I don't know what possesed me to buy this bottle of WR tonight, but I'm glad I did. BTW Tim, have you sampled any OF 100 from a new bottle lately? If so, do you feel it has changed any?
CL
NC-bought OF 100 was hot, but I recently had KY-bought OF 86 and it was much better - what I remember OF being.
OneCubeOnly
Tonight it's ORVW 12yo Lot B. I'm still kicking myself for not stocking up last December--Montgomery Co., MD had it for $19.39 and I only bought ONE BOTTLE!! ARRRRRGH!
MurphyDawg
Tonight I had the last (rather hefty) shot of a bottle of Ezra B that I inherited somehow during last years festival. . . I was sorry to see it good. The good side it that I have friends coming form out of stste tomorrow, and they are bearing a brand new full bottle! BLEEEE! CL
I really like the Ezra B SB. I discovered it during my stay in L'ville in July. Good stuff.
jeff
Last night I saw the "new label" OF 86 proof on the shelf a Liquor Barn. Maybe I'll pick up a bottle and try it again, as there's a better chance of getting a different batch.
Paradox
Yeah, I finished up my bottle a few months back and getting another bottle while in KY this year is without a doubt on my list. Great bourbon and at a not so bad price, at least when I got it...
Paradox
Doh! What an amazing price. I finfished up my first bottle of the 12 year a few weeks back and when I can find another for under $30 again it is a definate re-buy. Hell, all of Julian's whiskies seem to be! ratcheer
No, not lately. I guess I need to go buy one. But, right now, I have too many bottles of mid-shelf whiskey, having stocked up at the OGD sale, last month.BTW, I am really enjoying my OGD 86. But, night before last, I had a dram of the 114. There is no comparison. The 114 is sweeter and gives a mouth burst full of flavors. The 86 is relatively one dimensional (but, still great for the price I paid).Tim
pepcycle
Last night, I went to The Coach House for dinner and it was WR as a cocktail and an after dinner drink. Perhaps it was the Bananas Foster lingering, but I distinctly pick up toasted coconut. BTW, if you ever get a chance to see The Bats, a Lexington group that does rock and country cover tunes, see them. They are very good and have some fun songs as well. Six 40-50ish women with male guitar player and drummer. Great Time!!

Forbes
Nothing fancy tonight - Old Forester (86 proof). I really like this stuff and it's cheap. I believe I paid only $10.50 for the 750ml size bottle.Todd
robbyvirus
A coincidence! I was drinking some of my bottle of Ezra B. tonite that I picked up in Kentucky in June. Really great stuff...it's one of my favorites...very rich, and lingers long on the palate. Too bad I only picked up one bottle...I can't find this stuff out here in CA. Ambernecter
Just landed myself a new job with a large pay rise to boot. I think this calls for a large Stagg - then perhaps one more. I'm sure this stuff makes some distillers cry and hang their heads in shame, about how piss poor their Bourbon is!!
bobbyc
I'm sure this stuff makes some distillers cry and hang their heads in shame, about how piss poor their Bourbon is!! That's the truth! Until recently my wife would dodge Frying chicken when she could. I explained to her that half of it was presentation. Says I," The first thing you tell anyone who asks about your Fried Chicken is, " I can Fry a Chicken that would make Colonel Sanders Cry!"" Actually If the Colonel came back he probably would cry, but because some of the KFC's put out a product that doesn't resemble what it used to be. bluesbassdad
Rebel Yell. (YEEEEEEEHAAAAAA!)This is not really a bad bourbon. The question may be whether it's representative of bourbon at all. I suppose if someone who had never tasted liqour before wanted to try a sip of bourbon, this is what I might offer them. It definitely tastes enough like bourbon to distinguish it from s-----, and it doesn't taste bad. (I'm having a feeling of deja vu, as though I've written those exact same words before. Shudder....)This is my second bottle, which I recall cost less than $10 at Trader Joe's. It won't be a priority to rush out and buy another bottle when this one is gone, but I'll probably replace it eventually at that price. My bottle says it is from Louisville, which, according to someone who knows far more than I about such things, means that it comes from the old Bernheim Distillery, now operated by Heaven Hill. This one, like the various Old Fitzgerald bottlings, definitely does not have the so-called "Heaven Hill taste", according to my palate. I guess a wheat recipe and a different distillery would easily account for that.Yesterday I tried it in a Manhattan, and it was horrible. All I could taste was Gallo red vermouth and Angostura bitters. I'll definitely cut way back on both if I ever try that again. (Reminds me of the old dry-martini joke, whose punchline is "Not so loud!" -- spoken to the bartender, after he was intructed to say the word "vermouth" after pouring a glass of gin.)Man, this stuff is easy to drink. I'm startin gto make typis alredy. At least I had the pressence of mind to deleet the stupi dpoll, "Are You Wishy-Washy?", that I posted under the thread about neck foil.Yours truly,Dave Morefield
