Didn't see any other thread or forum to put this, but drank this tonight at the in-laws. Good easy sipper at 80 proof. 1978 bottling per the tax stamp.post-9650-1448981930356_thumb.jpg

Seems like Canadians from the 70s are out there. I found this time capsule from 1977 on a recent excursion. I've had significantly better luck here in New England with Foreign whisky than with Bourbons on my dusty, or pseudo-dusty hunting excursions given how picked over this region is. (the Canadians were very helpful in putting those export tax stamps with a year on them). post-9887-14489819346227_thumb.jpg

That's good for you local fellas, other fans of the Canadian style (I'm one) around the Country are less fortunate.

Well the one I posted above was "found" in my Father-in-Law's liquor cabinet.

Not sure if this is "good" Canadian whiskey, but this has been sitting in a local liquor store, still in the box, tax-stamp sealed. Believe it is from 1979 (and they're looking for $100 for it). If anyone is curious, I'd be happy to pass along the info via a PM.

I always tend to wonder if it is a duck with lead in its tail! And everywhere else.

Ran into some Balvenie 10 year Founders Reserve for $53.49. Way too much. I can get the 15 year single barrel for $59.99.

I agree that's too much, they weren't calling it rare or something were they?

No, just on the shelf like normal. There's only one retailer with good Balvenie pricing. Most places have DW for over 60 and the 15 for nearly 90. This was at one of those places.

I'm just gonna call one of you two next time I'm out. Passed on a bunch of stuff today that I never see around here, but just don't know enough about the Darkside to pull the trigger.

Deal.

Nothing terribly old. Wish I could remember it all. The one that I've looked up that sounds promising enough was the Bowmore Darkest. Oh, and a Chivas Bros Century of Malts. :/

Well then, let's just say my enthusiasm for the brand does not rise to current pricing levels.

Popped into a few new stores yesterday and found what I like to call a pseudo-dusty, which I define as a whisky that is still being made today but has been on the shelf long enough for the price to be substantially lower than current market value. Recent examples of my finds include 4 bottles of Talisker 18 (3@ $73 and 1 @ $70) and last night I found an Oban 14 for $30 in a very, very sketchy store. I had to wait 15 minutes for the clerks to finish helping the endless parade of people who could have starred in a perils of alcohol addiction video. After I while I began to question my own pursuit of hooch - but then I tasted the Oban and realized it was completely worthwhile. I can only imagine the days when Oban was going for $30 as the standard shelf price.

Would love to find Talisker 18 here at anything close to $70! Would be a definite buy. More like $100+ currently.

$100 is actually not bad at this point. Sad to say that. This last shipment of Talisker 18 is on the shelf at $150. The 25 is up to $300.

Talisker 18 is normally $125-140 in these parts but through diligent research I was able to locate the odd bottles on the shelf at 2005 prices. I hadn't planned on buying that much of the 18 but at that price I couldn't walk away. What's scary is how much premium single malts have gone up in price in just a few years.

Very true. Just amazing. Mac 25 is up to $900 in these parts, and we can't keep it on the shelf.

Picked up a Scapa 12, passed on The Macallan 18 1986 and earlier...for now.

We recently did a side-by-side of a 1980 Mac 18 and the current Mac 18. It was shocking how distinctly different they were, and how much more depth there was to the 1980. It was delicious. If I ran across one, I would certainly pick it up. Especially if it hadn't been marked up to current prices.
