What bourbon are you drinking - Fall 2013

Have you tried BIBs straight from the freezer? I love OGD that way. You get the benefit of a cool slushy without diluting your drink with ice. But, as we approach winter, I tend to prefer my bourbon at ambient temperature beside a nice fire.

You know, I haven't...until tomorrow...just put it up thar in the freezer! . Thanks, FF. I'll report back.

I have been slowly converting a dear friend of my wife from a scotch drinker to a bourbon/rye drinker. Tonight may have been the happiest yet saddest day of that journey. Her father passed away late last night so we had them over for dinner. I cracked a 10/107 ORVW and we toasted her father. Then I poured us all some 2013 FR LE SmB. I asked her which one she like better and with no hesitation she said FR! She then gushed that the FR 125th is the best whiskey to ever cross her lips. Anyway I thought it was nice to see someone not get wrapped up in Pappymania. Like I said, a happy but sad moment.

Opened the Kirkland Small Batch I picked up at Costco. Tried a small pour in a rocks glass while making an Old Fashioned. As others have stated, very similar to the standard knob creek offering.

Mouth feel was a little thin, could use a little more rye spice through the middle, but I find the wood component nice.

Stating all that, it made an outstanding old fashioned. The wood comes through nicely in the cocktail. Very happy I revisited this one. For 20 bucks a liter, in my opinion, this is a nice one to have on the shelf. If you poured this in a decanter, most wouldn't even think it was a costco private label.

If you're a holiday entertainer, this is a great option for your guests who might not know any better.

Agreeing here, with your take on this, Mark. A solid whiskey. It's a tough one to beat at $20/L for sure.

Having some FRSmB LE 2013 tonight. Hard to imagine a better bourbon, although sometimes I do prefer the 2012 FRSmB LE.

we had an inadvertent German night tonight. We invited over a group of friends for a pork roast, sauerkraut, mashed potato and cornbread dinner....one of them brought a german wine, and one brought a 6 pack of german beer.

now that the dishwasher is full and im relaxing, some OGD 114. may polish off the last 1/2 pour of KCSB after that.

Old Forester Birthday 2013 tonight... I really like it. Had a bunch of stuff I've been wanting to try at Aero Club (San Diego) last night: Corsair Triple Smoke, High West Rendezvous, Fogs End Monterey Rye, and Russels Reserve.

Have to say I really enjoy the StaggJr, but ECBP first batch is the better whiskey in my opinion (haven't cracked a bottle of second yet). Both are bottles that are in my nascent bunker.

Haven't had the pleasure of ECBP yet. Have a bottle ready to pop but paid $68 for it. Tough to put it in same category for me. It better have the wow factor Stagg Jr. has or it will be a disappointment for me.

That's exciting to hear. Just unfortunate that ECBP is as rare in these parts as a Cubs game in October.

Doing a side by side with ETL & EC12. Good old Elmer & Elijah. And they are making me wonder why I ever bother spending over $30 on other bottles.

Had my wife pour blind samples of WLW 2012 and 2013. I think of the 12 fondly and have additional stock, so I wanted to see if that bunker was warranted or if I should try to find more 2013. My first reaction was that everything about each pour was so similar. The noses were hard to distinguish. The first sample had more wood tannin and bitterness, and slightly more burnt sugar and leather. The second was a little sweeter and creamier. These were very difficult to distinguish. I thought a few times that my wife had double poured one of the bottles.

Adding water with a dropper in equal amounts separated the pack. The first fell apart quickly with tremendous bitterness up front. This subsided over 10-15 minutes but it never came back together. The second had the aroma really come to life with some more vanilla and brown sugar, and a better mouthfeel, but I didn't notice a shift in the flavor. I enjoyed both, but definitely preferred the second neat and with water. I concluded that the first was 2013 and my wife confirmed.

Neat there was almost no substantive difference, but this session resulted in a clean overall win for the 2012.
