Old Lamplighter
After starting the night across the pond in Scotchland, I've moved on to a bottle that I'm still experimenting with trying to find the right solution. It is my first bottle of Bulleit 10. I really, really want to like this one. Tonite, I added some ice shards to see if that would improve what has reminded me more of turpentine than a 10 year bourbon. :frown: So far, it has improved somewhat over the last couple of excursions. Maybe I just need to let the bottle alone for a while & allow the air to do its work.
393foureyedfox
A flight of Beams: Kirkand's, Baker's, KC SB, and Booker's. If I had my wits about me, I would have left the KC out of the mix because it is 9YO and the others are 7YO. Makes a better comparison of same age bourbons from same distiller at different proofs. Was especially pleased by the Baker's. There is only about one solid pour left in the bottle and it is getting really good just about when it is gone. (That's the way it always seems to go.) Still, the Booker's remains the star of the evening. The others are well within the acceptable range.your tastes seem similar to mine. KCSB and Bookers are my two favorites, usually. Which do you think is better of the two? I always find it odd that KCSB is about the same proof as Bookers, yet 1.5-2 years older, and is about $10-15 cheaper.on a side note, i had some JB black last night. its been here forever and i wanted to get rid of it. if i didnt already know so, id swear it had no relation whatsoever to Booker's and KCSB. Its age is right in between those two, yet the proof is 86....and you guys know how I feel about 86 proofers....that just proves sub 100 proofers suck. JPBoston
Just scratched two big bourbons off my 'must try list' at a local bar/grill:VW Lot B: Heavy Caramel, very nice. Seemed to have just a hint more wood char behind it than my last bottle of ORVW, which seems to make sense, given the two extra years in the barrel.WLW: Oh wow. AMAZING! Super thick, super sweet caramel with a hint of that Weller saltiness. I got the last pour out of the bottle, and got a lot of the barrel char (?) in my glass, which was fun, as I don't get a lot of unfiltered stuff. This is my new favorite bourbon. Gonna try harder to get a bottle this year. BTW, this stuff is so thick and chewy that I had to really take my time with it. The finish lingers forever. Now I see why everyone seems to agree that this is the bottle to get instead of chasing Pappys. The best part... both were only $10 per (generous) pour! Freaking Maker's Mark was $9, lol. brettckeen
Old Fitz 1849 8yr age stated circa 98?, 90' Old Fitz Feaux tax stamp, OWA, 9yr 10 month Ridgemont Reserve single barrel. Aged Stated Old Fitz 1849 is one I rediscovered thanks to Chicago Bourbon Outfit making a celebratory appearance at work tonight.
squire
I generally don't start until 6:00 am but with this time change that schedule may be altered. The dog says to hell with the clock he's hungry now and I'm inclined to agree.
BFerguson
FRLESB 12 last night. A bit tough to break this one in, still trying to figure it out. Get a lot of pure alcohol up front, with not much going on, but then it slowly uncloaks itself in the mouth and finish. different.Squire, I hear yah on the dog, mine's messed up but in the evening, always looking at me with that, "Idiot, you're late" look around 5pm. I give him a head shake, and he goes off looking for dropped cheerios from the youngest to sate his hunger till the real time. B
squire
Yeah, he's mastered the art of sneaking off to the kitchen when the girls are making breakfast but all the kids are out of town this weekend so he went back to sleep in disgust.Oh, and to stay on topic I choose Barton. I always find it odd that KCSB is about the same proof as Bookers, yet 1.5-2 years older, and is about $10-15 cheaper..I find the Booker's much richer and more satisfying on the palate and with a better nose and finish. Barrel location must have something to do with it because the Booker's seems more mature even if 2 years younger than KC. (Not that I object to either KC or KC SB.) Booker's costs $10 more in OH than KY so I bought 2 bottles on a recent visit to Liquor Barn. I find it too intense for an everyday pour but am always pleased to have an occasional pour. I take it neat and then with just a drop of water. And I mean a "drop." I dip my finger in spring water and then tap it on the edge of the Glencair. It only takes that drop to open up the bourbon for even more layers of enjoyment.

bingstein
Had the last pour of an 09 THH last night and it was sort of gross. I understand that there may be some barrel char at the bottom of the bottle, but it also seemed a bit cloudy and darker (likely due to the barrel sediment). I drank it because I'm not a poon, but I've never had a similar experience with GTS or WLW. Am I alone here?

SLOandSteady
Opened up my first bottle of EC12 and really, really enjoyed it. I would say even more so than ETL that I recently tried for the first time as well. The 94 Proof came across as much lighter to me. Very easy drinker. I know, I know - the char is part of the experience, but it is so concentrated at the last 2 oz . . . I couldn't take it. I haven't had the same with WLW, although my first GTS was similar (but not to the same extent as my THH to be honest, which is odd given the age). petrel800
I keep plenty of KCSB on hand, since the half price deal I found....but I never have Booker's here, I just treat myself to it at nice restaurants. But, I was pretty good this year and asked the fat guy for a bottle of it for christmas. We'll see if he agrees.

capitals83
Drinking the first batch of egg nog of the year. I rotate brandy, bourbon and rye with my egg nog. To start this year I went with a bottle of Old Grand Dad 86 I had tucked away after they switched to 80 proof.
