I think most of the negativel reviews of Forged Oak were critical of the price point. It is decent enough whiskey.

I keep going back to it hoping that will be the case but still underwhelming. For me I get more flavor out of an off the shelf EC12 or ER10 at half the price. But only way to know for sure is to try it your self.

Hmm, that might be a good SBS tasting to see if it is just my bias or truly the whiskey. What other readily available mid shelf rye based bourbon would you consider for a comparison? FR small batch maybe? A Smooth Ambler bourbon from MGP?

Must give that one some thought. :searching:

Picked up a bottle of SAOS 10 year, very nice poor if not a little simple. I mixed in a little ECBP last night and it was great. Man, there is nothing ECBP can't do. Over the last week I've mixed in a little with ER10, Henry Mckenna, and the SA... improved all of them into a dense and rich pour.

When you say 'I've mixed in a little with ...', how much (ratio) are we talking about? I like the ECBP so much on its own, I'm timid to use a lot of it for improving something else.

I don't mix in too much, and I don't really measure. I'd probably say an 80/20 mix with ECBP being the 20.

Great minds think alike! The whiskey that came to mind when I tasted the FO was EC12. I did I a SBS and found a very similar taste profile. The major difference was an additional hint of barrel flavor in the FO. FR and SA are good thoughts but would be hard to find with s similar age profile. HMcK 10YO? Or maybe Blanton's?

Yes, EC12 probably comes closest to matching the barrel profile in an off the shelf bottle that is about half the price that I can think of. Indeed, not a lot of "off the shelf" 15yo bourbon's out there at any price. Which is part of why this one was a bit disappointing.

Need to do a blind SBS with at least EC12 and maybe a ER10 against FO to test it my initial impression that EC12 is as good or better.

It requires patience, but if the rumored re-release of EC18 is true, then a 50/50 vatting of EC12 and EC18 might be an interesting SBS to FO. I have two EC18 store selections in the bunker that are amazing. I just don't think I want to commit one of these to the experiment!

AFAIK it's a one-off, bu yeah it is a bit spendy. I'd like to try a pour some time though.

Was in Specs Central Expwy (Dallas) store today. Usually only get there twice a year.

Seemed very low on BT items. No Weller at all.

they seemed well stocked on most other main line items. Tons of Willet. A wide variety of rye, except no Sazerac.

I picked up two handles of EWBIB, a handle of 4Roses Yellow label, WT Rare Breed, EWSB, Dickel 12, 4RSB.

had my hands on a MMCS, but just couldn't. Not a big MM fan.

This will keep my attitude adjusted for a little while.

Hey there, I'm actually in Charleston, SC and this is the only time I've ever seen the BiB version in a store here.

Picked up the last 'old' OGD BIB on the shelf, along with a 'new' OGD BIB. I'm assuming only labeling has changed; but I will do a side-by-side today or tomorrow, and find out for sure.

When I was in there a few weeks ago, they had the baby Saz in the glass case instead of the shelves. Thought it was funny. I see baby Saz around often enough, usually in Goody Goody

OK, here it is.

The 'new' label OGD BIB is pretty much the same as the previous version inside, if not outside. The only identifiable difference of any consequence at all, that I could determine, was a slightly (& I mean VERY slightly) lighter color on the new version. That can easily be a batch-to-batch thing among any brand out there. The aromas were pretty much the same (ordinary... as usual for OGD BOIB, never a strong point of this brand for me). The palate: Identical! (Good to great for it's type.) IMHO, of course.

The great start to my weekend last night, continued today. I headed out this morning with my wife to do a little shopping. One of my fellow bourbon Ho's gave me a call to let me know that one of our local stores got some Weller 12 in. Gary had them hold a couple of bottles for me, so I headed right over to pick them up. Decently priced at $31.99 each. I also saw my big boss from work while I was at the store. It was his birthday. He had a few bottles of wine picked out. I tried to talk him into some bourbon, but sadly he declined.

Cheers! Joe
