Every time I go to my big chain store, I see someone buy Bib and Tucker.... the "99 rating" note and the bottle obviously work. I wont touch it...>$50 for 6 yr NDP????

I'll keep drinking WTRB for $34.

That's what I'm talking about! Bib & Tucker just hit the shelves here with its pretty bottle and cut 99 rating note. Jeez.

Saw a guy in Spec's the other day, specifically asking for $70 and higher bourbons. I think he was fishing for Pappy or BTAC bottles, as he carried himself like a newb. Perfectly captured the bourbon craze for me - an older guy who doesn't really know what he's talking about, fishing for high-priced bourbons. The Spec's guy got him a bottle of Forged Oak they had in the back, and he was happy with that. I guess he was trying to get into collecting...not really sure.

Saw a guy pick up a bottle of Jack Daniel's fire and cinnamon what ever you call it. Bottle had a red label. Flavored bourbon....yuck!

I've been seeing this word much too often lately: "collection". Lot's of new people in bourbon are treating it as a collectables hobby instead of a consumables hobby. I see it time and time again, people saying "I just added this to my collection" or posting a photo of (usually an overpriced NDP) and asking "is this collectible?". As if we needed any more signs of how ridiculous the market it right now.

While in more than a few Spec's stores in Houston the customer will ask a clerk for help and 100% of the time they recommend 1835. I just stand there and shake my head. Never have I heard them ask a customer if they have ever tried other bourbons, if they like them, if they are mixing or drinking it straight.

Agreed. I'd qualify myself as a newb also, but I drink (and share) everything I find. :)

Edit: whoops, meant to quote flahute.

I've never once been recommended 1835 or seen it recommended to anyone else. They're usually pushing Beam products pretty hard at the Smith Street Spec's (Booker's, Knob Creek, Noah's Mill, in particular).

Yesterday, I saw some grab an EC12 and look at it, then put it back and grabbed a JR Ewing.

Wow. If you would have videotapeaped that, you could put it on YouTube and titled it, "video of a fool."

TT and flahute - Somewhat off-thread but "collectibles" caught my eye. Was talking to a friend who is an auctioneer and asked about whiskeys at estate sales - frequency, legal locally to buy, etc. He said that, about eight years ago, they did an estate auction in Tidewater Virginia involving 1,200 bottles of Wild Turkey - the deceased guy had an almost complete set of WT going back to before Prohibition.

Dang - that's a heck of a set. So the moral of that story is: "everything is collectible, even WT81". Collector's can start with the bottom shelf and be just fine.....

Ok, so I stopped in a popular Covington, KY store today (not TPS). As soon as my wife and I walked into the store, my wife points out two smaller older ladies, both easily in their late 70s/early 80s standing in the bourbon/whiskey aisle. They were standing really close to the bottles reading the labels and, frankly, right in front of where I wanted to be. They had several bottles of something in their "cart." As I walk up, they are looking for Canadian Club. One of the ladies looks at me and asked if I knew where the Canadian Club was. She pointed to a sign on the wall that read "Blended Canadian Whiskey" and pointed to the bottle shelf saying that this is where is should be. I politely told her no but agreed that this looked like where it should be located. As I was looking at the bourbon, the other lady walks up and tells me that she isn't allowed to drink but wished she could. She then asks her friend if she will ever come back to "this store" if they don't have Canadian Club. The other lady told her there would be no reason to come to this side of town if they don't. Just then, she turns around and notices it on the shelf behind us. She then loads up the cart. As we were leaving, my wife asked if I thought they had already started drinking before they came to the store.
