Old Forester 1870 showed up at my local monger at $44.95. 90 proof, NAS...not sure what they're selling with this one. Unless otherwise persuaded this is a pass.

I've passed on it numerous times as well. Just can't pay that much for 90 proof NAS bourbon. Got to draw the line somewhere.

Now it is a cool bottle and label.

The 1870 is a good bourbon, but I'm not a repeat buyer at $45. This means I'll be skipping the recently released 1897 (or whatever it is) also.

I found a store with a good supply of the Old Forester 1870 @ $45. I like Old Forester, but I'm with you guys. I can't justify that for 90 proof NAS and just ok reviews.

The biggest "value" I can see, and you have to dig a bit for it, is to see what the blender can do in blending barrels from different rickhouses/levels of essentially the same whiskey to in theory create 4 distinct profiles (as there will eventually be 4 different ones in this series). Is it a gimmick that provides a way to sell the same basic whiskey for a lot more money? You bet!

But I have sufficient curiosity about the experiment to acquire one of each of them for a SBS blind tasting alongside a regular bottling of OF, probably the Signature, just to see for myself as long as I don't have too work to hard to find the bottles and they are at least close to MSRP as they have been so far.

Not like any of these would ever likely be a regular pour anyway unless one of them truly does prove to be substantially superior to regular OF which admittedly seems a bit unlikely!

Well I trust your tasting and if you say that either of these bottles is better than OFSig then by George I will get one.

2 acquired and 2 more to go so it may be awhile!

Although I might do the Signature against this new 1897 BIB version soon just because!

If the high proof release is in the same price range, I'll be all over that. I won't even have to wait to read any reviews. Something tells me it will be $$$, but you never know.

Not sure there's even truth to it, but the reason I've decided OFSIG always wins blind tastings of BIBs is that there's older whiskey in the mix that edges out the 4-year competition. I'd like to think the premium 1897 version will be older than 4 years, but being NAS, I kinda doubt it.

Sub $80 I'd be in for the barrel proof for sure. Curious what proof BF juice tastes best at. I bet 100 proof.

Passed on several Orphan Barrel this week but also some Stagg Jr, ECBP for the money and just passed on 3 bottles in the wooden box of Blood Oath for $350 I mean that's only $116+ per bottle and close to $40 per bottle over retail.... Some crazy prices.

Saw ETL today for the first time in two years but passed on it at $50. It was closer to $25 the last time I bought it and I couldn't justify spending twice the money on it.

The boom hasn't subsided, that's for sure.... It's ~$35 state minimum here if you can find it.

Walking Stick bourbon. Anyone else have it? It's only $30 a bottle but I wanted to gather more research before pulling the trigger.

It's six-year-old single barrel Barton. I haven't tried it yet.
