What Rum/Rhum did you buy today?

Sat in on a zoom tasting a few nights ago.  We powered through nine samples over two hours.  Our host was an independent bottler/importer out of Boston called Raising Glasses.  Really nice folks and obviously passionate.  About half the tasting was various rums they selected and bottled.  Cask finished Four Square was tasted as was rum from Venezuela and Thailand!  The standout for me was a 16 yr Beenleigh from Australia.   Had to have it.  It ships soon.

That is excellent rum.  Brought some back from the distillery last summer before it landed in the states.  TW exclusive still...

Calvados barrel aged.  Heard about this one from the Altamar folks about a week before release, supposedly a much smaller release.  Haven't seen actual numbers, though.

I have one of these that I haven't opened yet.  I don't drink rum very often.  Curious to know your feedback on how this one stacks up.

Found this Bowman Rum in the back of the bar, so decided to go with it.

Didn't know A. Smith Bowman made rum.  Very cool!

I like the 12YR as well, I'm sure I'd enjoy this and will pick one up next time I'm near a TW.

I was gifted a bottle of Ron Zacapa No. 23.  I don't know rum so I'm assuming this is close to entry level sipping rum?

Perhaps since I am feeling a touch blue as Summer has now officially given way to Fall, I feel like a rum to hang on, right now.

Picked this 4S Up this week. I’m sure it’s going to be very good.

Damned good stuff and very unusual to find a Calvados finish in rum (or much else).

Th9s is an exquisite bottle. I don't buy every FS release anymore, but this one is just about a perfect blueprint for that Foursquare style.

I don't know who understands barrels better than Richard Seale.

I bought two bottles of rum recently.

Foursquare Equidem and Alambique Serrano Vida Nativa Single Cask #2 ‘Venado Temazate’. Both are cask strength rums but could not be more different otherwise.

The Foursqaure is a 14 year old rum aged in bourbon and black muscat casks. I am sucker for dessert wine and this one caught my eye. Very rich and sweet. Great muscat (grape, fig, date) flavors come through but do not completely overpower the rum and the familiar Foursquare taste.

The Alambique Serrano is a single cask and one of 250 bottles. It is aged in French Oak and Acacia casks. I have never had anything with Acacia wood and wow, what an experience. First, the rum is exquisite. Sugary and sweet, but definitely not in an overpowering sticky way. This is not nearly as dense as the Foursquare, for example. After the initial sugary hit, you get a potent but pleasant wood note. At first, it was foreign and a little overpowering. Then, by the 2nd and 3rd sip, it was incredibly nice and the rum very balanced. The flavor of the Acacia is strong like Amburana but without the cinnamon and spice and has a sort of Fir/Pine flavor (never tasted one I am going from smell). The latter flavor being about a 4/10 in strength and balanced with the woody notes.

This is unlike anything I have and was a great buy.

Both rums are excellent and welcome additions.

I've gone from buying everything Foursquare, to selected releases. This one interests me.

Those Slambiques are quite eye opening, huh?

I revisited the Equidem yesterday on a clean palate. More balanced then I had remembered and a little more oaky on the finish. Still very good, especially if you like the flavor of foursquare in general. I am also in the same boat Re Foursquare. I bought a ton of the early releases and now I am much more selective.

The Alambique blew my mind. Smoother than I expected (and even the 14 year foursquare) and what a flavor profile. I will probably try a release that doesn't have the Acacia wood. Would be interested to see how it holds up flavor wise without that influence. Having said that, I am very happy I got the Acacia wood finish as it is unlike anything I have and is incredibly tasty and neat (also how I drank it :)).
