Not to threadjack, but how does the RR compare to the Pikesville?  Thinking of picking up a higher end (for me) rye that is a step above Rittenhouse. . . .

I think they taste completely different from one another.

RR has the classic rye flavors.  Pikesville tastes closer to a bourbon.

I guess this makes sense if you consider their mashbills.

Rendezvous is more mature and probably a "better" product. I would  feel comfortable recommending it to anyone that enjoys rye.

I prefer the Double, but I would be a little more hesitant recommending that anyone buy a bottle before trying it. It has a little more of that distinctive young rye smack in the face I enjoy from time to time.

I thought they tasted somewhat similar, but thought Pikesville tasted really good on its own while Rittenhouse did better with a variety of vermouths in a Manahttan.  That said, Pikesville and Cocchi di Torino in a Manhattan is...awesome.

Never had Rendezvous, but I do like the Double Rye.

Rendezvous is one of the best ryes out there - a fantastic blend with, as noted above, the classic rye flavors and real balance to boot.   Double Rye is good too,  although for that younger "pumpernickel" flavor profile I like Dad's Hat.

Don't fail to try Lot 40,  a Canadian rye made from, I believe, a 100% rye mashbill.   I rarely bunker multiple bottles of the same juice,  but I have for Lot 40.   Just superb.

I just revisited RR after a HWMWND pour. While the MWND was better with the sweet fruity overtones from the French oak port barrel influence, the rendezvous held its ground which is nice considering it's easily available for around $46.

My understanding is Pikesville is barely classified as a rye.

Haven't tried the Double Rye but recently acquired my firs HWRR and thoroughly enjoyed the first pour. Interested in seeing how this opens up over time.

Not sure about this but in my opinion it's a great pour for $50 a bottle at 6 years and 110 proof

Any particular HWRR batches are better the others? I have unopened bottles of 14L09 and 14J21B. May also look to get a couple more of 16xxx

Recently tried pikesvile and loved it. Might have to do a sbs with HWRR.

Preferred the pikesvile. Caramel bomb and drinks so smooth for a 110 proof. Did a 60/40 of HWRR/Pikesville and really liked it. Read a lot about vatting things here but this was my first attempt. Might have to do this more often.

My recollection is that Pikesville and WT rye are both essentially the same mashbill that has the minimum 51% rye in it (as does the basic Beam and BT Sazerac rye I believe. The newish B-F/Woodford Rye was reportedly 53% rye as I recall). Pikesville is the same mashbill as Rittenhouse rye that is a bit older and at a bit higher proof. Now the source of the rye grain itself (and the other grains used) may well be completely different. Some use rye from the US or perhaps Canada. Four Roses uses rye from Germany as I recall (part of the whole "GMO" hoohah) but either I never knew or can't remember the source for HH or WT.

If you find them to be significantly different then it just goes to show how many variables there are that contribute to the final flavor of the various bourbons out there!

I find Rittenhouse and Pikesville very different.

And yet they have the same humble beginnings. One of the many fascinating (at least for me) curiosities about this hobby (obsession? B)) of ours!

*Like* Since there is no "Like" button.  I like both but for different reasons.

Don't think I would want to have any contact with a GMO hoohah

You never know unless you try! I wouldn't have thought I would like a whiskey called Yippee Ki-Yay either but I was wrong. B)

My dear departed Daddy always told me there was; "No such thing as bad hoohah.   Some will always be better than others; but you'll never find any bad hoohah!"

I think he mentioned something about maybe being able to smell the difference.       I believe this is totally applicable to Bourbon.     Maybe that was what he was talking about.

I don't know if he was referring to anything GMO-related, though.    He never mentioned that.

Funny how tasting blind changes perception. I revisited HWRR vs. Pikesville and preferred HWRR as being a little more complex. I also tasted HWMWND vs. HWRR and picked HWMWND but considering one is $65 and the other is $45 I'll take HWRR. I'm a firm believer in ththe e law of diminishing returns. I'm stocking up before it disappears.

I love my bottle of Double Rye, I have yet to taste HWRR.

I can say that I had Willett Rye at a party and it tasted divine.

The Double Rye is worth the price.

Personally, I prefer the HWRR over the Double Rye. I tend to think the Double tastes too young for my preferences.

I am am a fan of the MWND, and I have had some good bottles of both the RR and DR that were given a secondary barrel finish and some of those have been very good as well. Let's all hope HW doesn't get  changed too much after the acquisition
