Finally got done with quarantine (thanks, unvaccinated person at thanksgiving), and went to something unusual for me.  I've had a bottle of Stolen Overproof Rum, a 6 year old Jamaican rum.  Surprised at the amount of funk, but very tasty neat without too much fire, good finish and honestly just about the right amount of funk for me.  Oh look, my glass is empty, time for number two!

Nice I’ve had a few and have one open. Good time to revisit.  I tend to add a bit of water though.

This is 6yr Hampden if I recall correctly. Wish they made it in 750s but for like $20 just buy 2! Good call.

Marekv or anyone have any information on Zanj rums? Looks like it’s distilled at a different distillery than Barbancourt (Berling S.A vs. Barbancourt).  Looks the bothers split off at one point.  Current CEO is named Barbancourt.  Barbancourt appear to be like the Beam family in Kentucky.

it’s quite dark.  First impressions I like it, just wondering if it possibly had any coloring or sugar added?  Not a big risk at under $30.  Also from a store that usually sources good products, NASA liquor in Houston.

I think the Barbancourt family must have splintered at some point, as have many (to your point) in the business. I do like this line quite a bit-- the 8 yo in your picture is probably the most balanced of the lot in terms of brightness. The 15 yo is extremely dry and woody-- even by my oak-friendly standards. Overall a fantastic value and quite entertaining to blend between the bottles.

Oh boy-- this 20 yo is the ultimate curse-worthy oak liqueur. I'm assuming the 20 years of maturation took place in Scotland-- as the vibrancy is full tilt boogie.

Ah yeah it looks I read they split with the first generation one of the sons leaving to start the distillery that makes this.

Do you know if this has any additives?  Sugar or coloring?

That color is beautiful, age looks to have done this well.

Seems all legit in regards to dosage/color— but an all-new brand with a 15 year old offering raises a few flags. However, given the price and quality of the liquid— I’m a buyer. Based on the wood influence on the 10 and 15 expressions, there’s no solera BS involved.

The 20 is lighter than the totally opaque 15– go figure. Really an odd set compared to the Panama-Pacific and Don Pancho age-stated expressions which fail to show at this particular party.

It is a relative but I don’t the producers of Zanj have any influence at Barbancourt.

As I have said before about Haiti who know what is coming out of there. It’s the Wild, Wild West…

Knowing the standards for Blackadder I’d assume there wouldn’t be any coloring or additives.

Pure Panamanian rum is dangerously smooth like a fine scotch.

Hampden Overproof before Mrssmokinjoe and I start on the Christmas cooking baking.  Actually, I’m of little help, but provide moral support, occasional stirring and mixing, and a steady supply of spirits tasting notes…🤣

I’m still single so the only solution is to drink for two.

Did either of you add any water?  I know from the Kill Devil bottlings that I have that overproof Hampden opens up beautifully with a splash or two.

Not in this instance but yes there’s lots of room for experimentation at that proof+funk range. Yesterday I was more playing with air exposure time thanks to having two pours consumed over 7-ish hours while doing late night work.

This one greatly benefits from a long wait in the glass. Out of the bottle I don’t find it very Hampden like, this is not as lush and dunder/aromatic like the independents I’ve had, but more oaky, dense, bourbon-spicey? After an hour or so the Jamaican hidden in there becomes way more pronounced.

Amen to that.  I've done that as well and air-time works wonders too.

I picked this rum up a few weeks ago, came from Belize. 14y, 130.2 proof, and drinks like a 105 RO 110 proof. What a fantastic rum.

Had some of the Black Tot I got from KL.  The blend was wonderful.  The oiliness, funk, followed by layers of vanilla and brown sugar were unreal and lingered longer than expected.
