I imagine the city never slept last night and nobody is at work today?...

Uhhh I'm pretty sure I heard fireworks on the street from my hotel room last night. It was fairly crazy out there.

I belatedly popped open a Pappy 15 after work today to celebrate the Cubs winning the World Series. What a long, but great game. When the final out was recorded, we heard fireworks here in Rockford too. My wife and I both went to work today, but we were dragging.  

 

FWIW, I have to be honest. After the Cubs won last night, I wanted to have one small pour of something special. I reached into my cabinet for what I thought was a Pappy 15. I opened it up, and as I started to pour, I realized it was a new bottle ORVW 10.   Oh well. It's all good.

Out to dinner with an old college friend last night at Forno's restaurant in Newark, NJ. Ordered an Ommegang Abbey Ale and a side of Knob Creek neat, a generous pour. Tasted pretty good.

A wee SBS on this Friday afternoon. WT101 vs. HH BiB. The 101 goes for around 20 bucks-round heah and the EW about 12. With all the hoopla surrounding " allocated" bourbons this time of year I though it might be fun to sip a couple readily available everyday table bourbons. I started with the 101 and am a fan of the house of Russell in its 80s era 101 and modern day RB (108, haven't delved into 112 or the newer one yet) and some STELLAR RR SB private/store picks. The 101 is a fine, serviceable pour but that's about it, it's good, not great but it's only 20 clams, I would prefer the flavor with more of that young edge rounded off but,again, 20 bucks. Dark chocolate north of 72% and some char then young booze. I use 101 as my go to travel bourbon, it's almost everywhere you go and at least I know I will enjoy it.

EWbib has similar color less rye spice and a boozy prickle but not to the level of the 101. There is a roundness to the flavor that I find really satisfying. The sweetness gives me more milk vs dark chocolate (though I prefer dark in actual chocolate) and there's a nice malted milk ball thing going too (the barley?) Overall a less bitter presentation. Neither are harsh but don't hide their youth, on this day the EW wins out. These are different but  look/taste similar in age and I have to figure price into future purchases. The 101 doesn't give me 8$/750 more enjoyment that the EW, the EW may very well punch above its weight. 

Back on topic, I am enjoying both but will purchase EW over 101 going forward though good luck finding EWBIB on a bar in some remote or even semi remote location so WT 101 it shall be in those cases.

Thanks very much Joe, its that rarest of beasts the Friday off and thought I should have some fun. Wednesday's enjoyable pour was the vaunted ( to my taste) JR selected OESF gift shop edition. THAT wAs on a whole nuther level, I may shed a tear when I finish the final pour of which there may be about 2 at the most. Have a great weekend!!

It was never an LE on its own but made its way into some of the LE small batches such as the 125th. It also appeared as a single barrel gift shop bottle (not LE amazingly). It's long since gone.

I'm enjoying some from a friends bottle.

OWA to get the weekend started.

Rebel Yell 10 Single Barrel.  First couple of sips from a newly opened bottle.  Neat in a glencairn.  Nice aroma - barrel notes and sugar.  Palate follows the nose with the addition of a light cocoa powder note.  If this had a thicker mouth feel and a longer finish, I'd stop my fruitless hunt for Pappy 15.  Look forward to spending more time with this.  I have two and two more on the way.  $50 range is fair value - and I do love my wheaters.

KCSB is tonights pour, been a while since I put my thumb print on a bottle at the distillery in 2014 which is in the bunker,  so I had to buy one to remember why I bought it in the first place.  Cheers.

Really nice SBS, well done.  Not to quibble, but this was Evan Williams BiB not truly HH BiB, although EW of course is a HH product.

 

I agree with most everything that you wrote. I find the EW BiB does indeed punch above its weight and in this regard is probably the better value. But I still find the 101 to be the more interesting pour overall, presumably due to its extra spiciness. But that's just a personal taste preference.  I could live happily with either.  Cheers.
