What bourbon are you enjoying? Fall 2016

Me and a buddy went out to BBQ place which has a decent selection of bourbon.  Had a pour of WLW and ORVW last night.  Both were great pours.  Need to go back and try some of the others they had.

As as people scream about the boom and flippers and limited availability of the already Limited Editions, here is a HUGE part of the equation. On premise accounts are sucking up hundreds of bottles that would have been available to the retailers. Random BBQ joint with BTAC and VW. This is not isolated. Three years ago even the high end steak joints around here had standard single malts and high end cognacs. But bourbon was Jack Jim and Maker's. 

 

On the one hand this is a good development because more people get to experience these offerings. On the other hand allocations to the retailers are even tighter than they were.

It does seem that there a lot more bars in MD are getting bottles of btac and pappy then in previous years.   Makes sense. There is a lot more tax revenue selling pours in bars than selling to the home market.

If you're talking about the place I think you're talking about, theyve had a big selection for quite a long time.  It's typically where I go to try all the fall LEs.

Starting the night off right with a glencairn of 2013 Michter's 10.  The next one is going to be a barrel proofer, but I'm still trying to decide between HHSS #2 and Staff Jr.

Lol!  My phone's autocorrect has been prohibition-splaining the crap out of what I write lately.  Anything relating to alcohol, tobacco, or especially firearms.  You'd think my funsafe was full of broomsticks and pistons.  Meanwhile, my liquid cabinet is chock full of the, your, and Scott.  

 

I'm still working on the Michter's, and the ol' oak juice is tasting pretty good tonight.  The Select Stock is a good bit more oak forward than STAGG JUNIOR, so I think I'll probably end up going with that.

Thought tonight was going to be a light night but, between football, basketball and flavorful single barrels, that plan failed.  Enjoyed a nice pour of a store selection of WTKS to start and followed up with a couple of small pours of a store select of 1792 single barrel.  Am I done for the night?  Depends on how the Packers game goes.

I agree that on premise accounts are taking a lot of bottles from retailers, but if not for that BBQ joint, I never would have tried this year's OFBB, Booker's Rye or even W12. The food ain't bad either. The on premise whiskey bars have a good place in our hobby. We should do a meet and greet sometime at K****'s.

Long day today. My son had some plumbing problems with his double kitchen sink. We fixed one issue a couple of weeks ago, but other things cropped up.To make a long story short, we decided to replace everything today. We put in all new pipes, and a new garbage disposal to boot. We done good. No leaks and everything works,  It also looks better than it did before. After a late supper, I treated myself to a couple of nice pours of Batch #3 Stagg jr. Well deserved if I do say so myself.

Yeah we really should!  I'll be out of the country for work and then in Kentucky for the holidays pretty much from now until January, but I think we should really try to set up a meet and greet for next year.  It'd be great to get something semi-regular together.

 

Edit: I went with HHSS#2 last night for my second pour.  Intriguingly, leading off with the Michter's 10 really brought the fruity cognac finish of HHSS to the front.   This gives me an idea for some experiments.

Last evening, had some FRPS OBSV, 9 year 5 month.  Pretty outstanding stuff as far as I am concerned, and getting better with airtime.  Drinks very easily for 113 proof. The PS OBSV had eluded me for some time, until one of my locals got a barrel in recently.  Priced right at $56, and really excellent.

I tried Blanton's SFTB for the first time this weekend, and came away quite impressed.  On balance I think it drinks even better than my ECBP and Stagg Jr. - similarly full-flavored, but more refined.

Sitting on the patio on a glorious 70 degree afternoon. Reached for a pour of ORVW from (I think) 2012 (no laser code that i can find so going on purchase date best I recall without checking my spreadsheet).

Yep they do have a fine selection.  Food is really good too.

If you ever do decide to meet up there for a drink, throw me an invite.   I'm there at least once a month anyway.  They have much better prices on the LE than bars in DC or Annapolis.

Have you tried the 16 yet? Not opened mine yet.

 

 

I am finishing off an ECBP 128 proof. This took a little while to open up but I enjoyed it when it finally did.

The ECBP #7 is quite tasty, I got a bottle at my parents house , I enjoy it every time I visit

I did not open the 2016.

I was lucky to grab two bottles at retail. I'm saving it. I'm very pleased with the 2015.

I think I'll start with the SAOS10 & finish with ECBP.  Both are very good.

Just had my first pour of GTS today at the local.  It's the 2015 version, 138.2 proof - a piker next to the '16 but still a butt-kicker.  I liked it better neat despite the proof - the heat and spicy rye kick balanced out the sweetness.  With even a few drops of water it became incredibly vanilla-marshmallow sweet - heavenly nose and delicious, but after a couple of sips the sweetness brought on palate fatigue.  So far, WLW is still king for me.
