I'm sorry I didn't even say which one lol, the one in downtown south loop store

I never cared for stagg jr. Tasted it and never bought a bottle. Also grown men should avoid the abbreviation "LoL" it's kinda girly

  • 2 weeks later...

I finally got around to trying this. A local retailer had a few bottles of the 128.7 proof @ MSRP. The first sip, high proof is obvious. A little ice and some time, it calms down. I get black cherries and some brown sugar, nice texture. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I ended up really enjoying it. I had stayed away because some of the other BT mash bill #1 bourbons, like regular BT bourbon and ER don't do much for me. Along those same lines, I don't care for JB, but like Knob Creek SB. I leave regular Elijah Craig on the shelf, search far and wide for ECBP. In the limited selection and availability of unfiltered barrels proof bourbons, I think Stagg Jr. compares nicely at $50.

Has anybody heard whether this will become a regular enough release that we could expect to find it frequently and at suggested retail?

Yeah, I believe MSRP is $49. It certainly doesn't seem to be as scarce as ECBP, at least around here.

One of my dealers has it at $79 and the other at $99. Yes I continue to pass it up.

When it first came out, it sold out quickly due to it's name and lineage despite the bad reviews. Now that most have tried it and a lot of bad reviews still persist, it lingers on the shelves longer in some markets. That works well for me because I like it and can find it. Still can't find it locally, but it's out there on the internet.

I'm still kind of chuckling when I read the bad reviews, even reviews of the second batch are still trying to compare this to George T Stagg BTAC release. If you go in with that expectation, you're going to be sadly disappointed. Personally, for what it is, I've enjoyed both batches. I'll take ECBP over it, but it's a nice change of direction and it's funny I say that, because when we did a blind tasting of S Jr, ECBP and RRSmBSB BP, I wound up choosing the Jr over the ECBP. I'll also add that I find the Stagg Jr to be light years ahead of the first batch of the CHET Barrel Proof stuff. If this is where the Old Charter 10 discontinued bourbon is going, that is fine by me as I just wasn't a fan of the OC10.

I agree with you. I passed on the latest release, thinking I'd save the cash for other limited offerings. But I tried it at a bourbon bar and was really impressed. The nose alone on Stagg Jr is worth the price of admission, especially with a splash of water. Now, I regret not getting a bottle or two.

You just have to approach it as a stand-alone bourbon, and not expect it to be a clone of GTS.

I have one bottle open that I drink on its own and vat with BT SB, and have two in the bunker (one of each batch). I am happy to have them.

Frankly I think BTBP would go over better but there are no rumors of Stagg Jr. collecting dust are there?

Yeah, I agree the Stagg name created unreasonable expectations. I like it as well. I can't drink it straight. Typically, blend with water or BT to get it down to between 100 and 110 proof. I noted a strong resemblance to CEHT SmB the last time I blended it to 110 proof.

I also cut it with a little standard BT. Absolutely love it this way.

Thanks, flahute. Hadn't thought of trying this.

Finally got a bottle of the latest release. Granted, I paid a flippin' fortune for it. But I'm happy to finally find it again.

Do you have any ratios for this or just by eyeball/taste? I may try cutting it with BT this week.

I recently picked up a bottle of this, and then had a buddy give a bottle as a gift literally 2 days later. Oh well, I do think it is a decent pour, and it won't go to waste.

I like a 1:1 ratio of Stagg Jr and BT.

I go by the eyeball/taste method on this one. It's mostly Stagg Jr. If I had to guess, I'd say it's 4:1 or 5:1 in favor of Jr. It's incredibly drinkable and enjoyable this way.

I've never tried it 50:50 like Quantum. It's worth a try though. If I don't like it, it's easy to rectify!

Jr showed up in Rancho Cucamonga for $47, batch 2. Not sure when I'll open it but had to snag a bottle at that price.

As a side note, in the bottle it is one if the darkest bourbons I've ever seen.

Just tried bath #2, I like it. I just keep adding small amounts of water until it reaches my maximum alcohol level.
