I grill out all year round in Wisconsin. Somewhat less in the winter, but if I have a nice steak or some ribs, a little cold isn't going to stop me from firing up the grill.

I enjoyed the Stagg Jr. very much. I didn't compare it to the GTS bottles of the past, just compared it to other barrel proofs in that price range. Not that there are many, but I would buy this again.

Agreed. I've defended Stagg Jr many times, here and other places. Not sure why, because who even cares what others think so long as I like it, but it's good. And you're right - compare it to other $50 barrel proofers, which are... what? ECBP and Bookers, give or take a few bucks either way depending on local pricing? ECBP is incredibly tough to find, too. Of the three, I'd take ECBP first but Stagg Jr is no slouch. All my opinion, naturally.

Scored a bottle Stagg Jr for $45 on saturday. It was the last bottle hiding behind the counter while I was checking out with KCSB for $36 and a 1L of Bulliet Rye.

Same here. I really didn't care for it at first, but after a couple of weeks it opened up nicely. The only problem is that it's still really overpriced in the DC area.

Just got a bottle of this today from my local store for $51. Not sure if this is part of the latest release from BT or if this is something they held back from the previous one. Anyone have any ideas on how to tell the difference in releases?

There is no batch # on the bottle, so if there are different batches, they'd have to be differentiated by proof. I believe that all bottles released so far have been 134.4 proof (67.2 abv) though, which indicates that there was only one batch of barrels dumped and bottled, and they've released it in a few different waves. Therefore, the bottle you picked up could have been from the most current release or one of the prior releases, since there's no way to distinguish them, but they should all be identical product anyhow.

I’m not sure if BT plans to keep the proof consistent at 134.4, similar to what WT does with RB, but if they do then it'll be impossible to differentiate between batches/releases.

I passed on this last week due to a lot of unfavorable opinions. I think I'll go back and check it out. $50 doesn't seem unreasonable for barrel proof BT product. Worth finding out for myself.

Gotta say, Stagg Jr. disappointed me greatly. Not that it's bad-- it isn't. But to bear the "Stagg" name is to set some high expectations-- and it doesn't meet those by any means. No where near the complexity of regular Stagg, no where near the mouthfeel, no where near the finish. An average bourbon is how i'd describe Jr. Give it a different name and a price in the $25 - $30 range and I'd probably have an entirely different opinion. FWIW.

Barrel proof is nice, yes. Some flavor to go with it wouldn't be a bad thing, either.

Maker's Mark might not be barrel proof, but it's far more complex than Stagg Jr. And a lot cheaper. Just IMO of course.

I went back to my bottle of Stagg Jr this evening, and came away with the same conclusion; It's a brash and scrappin' offspring of his Deified father, and he more than holds his own in my glass.

My girlfriend managed to get me a few bottles of the Jr. in Houston.

They'll be my first ever. Looking forward to a taste at the end of the month.

Seeing this forum pop up again reminded me it has been a while since I visited this one. While my first tasting left me unimpressed, I think that was an off-day, as I'm really enjoying it for what it is. That rye pepper stands up and demands to be acknowledged behind a veil of sweetness. :yum:

Picked up my first bottle of Stagg Jr today (ordered from PA LCB). Looks like it might be a new batch? Proof is 128.7

So far, I've only had it over an ice cube and am surprised at how easy it is to drink. Of course, that usually implies that the flavor profile lacks complexity, which I find to be true in this case.

Will have to revisit this one neat.

I find drinking Stagg Jr. much better after drinking another high proofer. Right now I start with CEHT BP and then move to Stagg Jr. For whatever reason, that seems to be a winning combination, although it's usually the last combination for the night. :falling:
