Kilkerran 12 year finally arrived in Houston! I got a bottle with a Spec's Gift Card I got for Christmas. It was as good as I hoped as I have loved the WIP bottlings. Certainly it shows it's kinship with Springbank, but it is peatier and has more of a sweet, fruity taste rather than what I would call the chalky and buttery note that Springbank has (which I love).

And only $65. I think I am fed up with the Bourbon bullshit and just made be going back to stay with Scotch. I know Springbank isn't going to enter into the world of nonsense. Although there is certainly a lot of nonsense with other Scotch distilleries...

Right on right on. I had this epiphany a while back as well. #fuckbourbon. [emoji6]

Picked up a bottle of Glendronach 18 Allardice today, it was the last bottle on the shelf and desperately needed a home, so I happily obliged.

Also tempted by:

- Talisker 18

- Springbank 18

- Longrow 16

Have found Yamazaki 12 fairly "cheap", although it seems really lousy value at the same price as Talisker 18.

Yeah I think I would have to go with the Talisker 18 in that battle. I used to get it about twice a year when it was < $100. Just can't go the $135 or so. Talisker 10 is still affordable though, thank goodness.

Nice, I am a huge fan of Glendronach, including the 18 Allardice.  I don't know about elsewhere, but it seems that Glendronach is getting really hard to find here in NJ.  Obviously, the 15 year Revival is discontinued, the 12 year comes and goes, and the 18 and 21 were around but now seem to be mostly gone and not restocked.  Having said that, I sort of saw the handwriting on the wall, and bought a few of each to have around over the past year or two, as at a minimum, the profile is likely to be changing soon, and the prices will inevitably be going up.

Along similar lines, Aberlour seems to have had a huge price hike here in NJ, to the effect that much of their core range has gone up like $30-$50 at retail with the recent shipments.  Strange things afoot in the scotch world.

Scooped up a Jameson Black Barrel for the wife. She's not a big whiskey fan and this was the first one she tasted and liked. Gotta keep the Mrs. happy so she won't notice all the bottles I intend on bringing home next week.

Picked up a Laphroaig from Le Maison Du Whisky's 60th anniversary. Was a hefty tag, but was on sale and my other Old Particular bottling needed some company.

Cheers all!

Lagavulin 12 from on 2014 for $84 at a cruddy little store.  Never had it but figured this was a good price and trigger was pulled.

I broke down and bought a bottle of 100% CC rye today.  Most folks either love it or hate it, but at $12 and change, how can one really go wrong for a hearty dose of Canadian rye?!

My first journey into the peat bogs.

IMG_5255-2.jpeg

One 200ml bottle each of Lagavulin 16, Talisker 10, and Cragganmore 12.

Box was on discount at ~$40 otd because it has a dent on the side. I've been looking to try out some of the smokier scotches but didn't want to buy a whole bottle and have limited time to visit bars, so happy to grab this.

Those are some good choices for an entry into peat.  I jumped in the bog head first. I'm a hug Ardbeg fan.  Uiggedail is my favorite expression of theirs.  If you find you like the Talisker profile, Talisker Storm seems to be being closed out at many stores.  It was in the $80 range and now it's in the $35 range.  Not sure if it just didn't move well, discontinued, etc.  I prefer it to the 10 Year.

Can't say I like Storm better than the 10 but at $35 the slightly more peaty Storm is a decent deal on close out. Part of the NAS line that Diageo/Talsiker started doing a few years back but I don't think it has sold all that well as I often saw it on the shelf. There was also a Talisker "Dark Storm" travel retail bottle for a while that supposedly had a heavier barrel char and smokier quality but I didn't really care for it as I recall. Probably still sitting somewhere in the back corner of the basement.

Might be time for a retest!

You have 3 or my favorites in that box.  I love the Talisker and Cragganmore.  The Lagavulin is a direct kick to the senses and I have to be in the mood for that one!  All 3 are defiantly worth having.

Talisker Storm retails for $70 to $80 here, CostCo had it for $39 last winter.  I stocked up at that price.  ;)

If it had an older price that might have been hard for me to do! But at the current prices it would have been pretty easy.

I see the higher proof bottles (change occurred in about 2011) going for $350-$400 and up. Even the newer ones bottled at the typical 91.9 proof tend to be north of $200 if you can even find them.

It was about the same price as the current watered-down release.  Nevertheless, at least in Australia, I think the current release Talisker 25 is overpriced, especially since the 18 is availablr for around 66% less.

Got a bit carried away today:

- Balvenie Tun 1509 Batch 3

- Springbank 18

- Springbank 12CS

No more whisky purchases until I've gone through at least 3 of my 7 open bottles.
