I went to a large chain store as they were showing they had Elmer T Lee in stock. I drove 20 miles to the store to find that it was not on the shelf. I asked one of the employees and he checked. Yes, it was in stock. He got a ladder and checked some boxes up high, and low and behold, he pulled the last bottle down for me. He said someone must have been hiding it.

The place ace sells their liquor at MSRP, so I got it for 22.99. The last time I saw it elsewhere, it was fetching 40.

I know where you were . . . . . .

See my posts in the "Buffalo Trace shortage/allocation" thread!!!!!   :D

Close. I normally go to the Shrewsbury store, but went to the Natick store specifically because they were calling out the Elmer. Sipping it now. It was worth the trip.

Just in case any of y'all wonder, I merged the new Elmer T. Lee with an already existing one.

Cheers! Joe

$60 for Weller Special Reserve?!?!?!  I paid $15 at Frugal McDugal's in Nashville less than 2 years ago.

That's a 1.75L...but overpriced nonetheless.  I don't care for WSR but handles are $35ish around here.

I missed that - still...there were better $15 whiskies then.  Big difference in the WSR and OWA which was a whopping $18 then!

So I was talking to a co-worker who is into bourbon a bit, and I shared my experience with getting a bottle of Elmer. He told me he knew a place that sold it. I went to the place after work. They were selling the same bottle for 90 bucks. Elmer is very good at 23. I couldn't see spending 90 bucks for it. Apparently they are getting it though.

So it goes.

One store about 20 miles away is "trying" to sell it for $100.

Last year the stores around me that had it on the shelf were priced between $37.99-$45.99. This summer it's bump up to $41.99-$47.99.  I've bought two at the $41.99 price and have enough bunkered now that I no longer chase it.

ETL is good but I can't imagine paying $70-100 for it when I can buy BT, CEHT Small Batch, Blanton's, Eagle Rare, etc at or near retail every day of the week.

I agree.  I think the most I paid was mid-$30s.  However, I guess I can see someone willing to pony up if they have never seen it before and they really want to try it.  I prefer everything you list over ETL except BT.  I just never found it in my wheelhouse which is interesting since I like CEHT and ER.

Never seen one on a shelf for under 90 myself, so I'd grab 2 in the mid 40s pretty quickly.

I've had no luck finding any ETL in the Houston area.  I had one store tell me they might get some in soon and took my info, but also quoted me a price of about $135 :/

Don't pay that if you can find RHF or even HPR. Even if you can't. It's good but not $50+ good IMO. Try it in a bar or network with people in your area for a sample. That should satisfy your curiosity until you manage to find a bottle.

Or Blantons. All the same mashbill. I also do not think ETL warrants $50+. It's generally smooth and I have used it as sort of a gateway bourbon for some friends, but it's rarely amazing in any way. For $135 you can probably get a bottle of Blantons Straight From The Barrel shipped to you, and that can be amazing, in my opinion

Yeah no way I would pay more than Blanton's (~$50) for ETL. It's good but no better than Blanton's. $135 is just crazy. Definitely try it in the bar before shelling out extortionate rates.

Thanks for the feedback fellas.  Glad I found this board.  It's really helped out with my new found appreciation for Bourbon.

Good idea on the Blantons Straight From the Barrel.  I'll be in Scotland over Christmas.  Hopefully I can track one down over there.

^^^^Don't forget that Ancient Age 10* (star) is also the #2 MB.

Although it is now much younger that it used to be, it'll still beat the hell out of paying $100+ for a bottle of ETL!

I purposely left out blantons as it doesn't taste like the others to me. Very much refined. Some like that. I don't really love it. SFTB is another matter.

Good number of bars in Houston will have ETL in the $8-$14 range. I've had some really good pours of this and some so so pours. Waitlist at Spec's does seem to actually work as I got a call for this a few weeks back $30.
