I did, too, and I still have no clue who he is.  I mean, I understand he's an actor but I don't recognize him one bit.

I had to google him as well and TBT he is in one of my favorite movies (That Thing You Do)

I was hoping this was going to be available as part of Amazon Prime membership, but I guess prime members still have to pay for it.

I wish also. The only amazon option is to order the DVD for $20+. I've only found it on iTunes for $4.99 to rent or $12.99 to download.

It is on amazon video (just not free with prime).  I think I had the choice to rent or buy (or watch the preview) from the Amazon Video app on my smart TV.

OK, I had to Google Steve Zahn, but immediately recognized Freddie Johnson and Marianne Barnes’ names...Surely, a secondary symptom of advanced Whiskirexia Nervosa...:D

I look forward to seeing this.  Perhaps a viewing on the GN Back 40 during Sampler should be arranged?

Now there's a thought! Perhaps we can put chairs in the bottom of the pool and project it on the side wall. After all it will probably be empty to keep Troyce out of it...

I watched it on Saturday night. I needed something uplifting to help me come down from the tension of watching "Mudbound".

I enjoyed it a lot. I sipped some EH Taylor Small Batch while it was on.

Steve Zahn... The sidekick to Matthew McConaughey in Sahara. Not the classic with Bogart, but the 2005 version. No classic but a fun movie. Zahn is pretty good in it...

My favorite Steve Zahn movie is "That Think You Do". Whenever I see him, I always harken back to his role in that flick.

Even though I did have to Google his name, on did recognize him afterwards.  I too, immediately remembered him in That Thing You Do.  He played such a goofball, and was one of the highlights of that flick.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. However, my very minor complaints are I could have done with slightly less cocktail footage, although I get it that it's probably geared to getting younger viewers as well and I can't hate them for trying to reach an audience.

Second, no offense whatsoever to Marianne Barnes, but I felt like she played quite a big role in the film and I personally would have liked a bit more from the older fellas like Jimmy Russell. Even the third generation Buffalo Trace employee was very entertaining, even though I can't quite remember his name. Again no offense to her, but you just can't beat the wisdom of someone with decades of experience, and I can't be mad at the film makers for including a female master distiller in the film.

wasn't much (or at a all) out of Harlan either. I thought that odd considering the role they are playing in the current state of things.

And I get it, they’re trying to reach an audience of younger/newer bourbon drinkers, including females. I suppose if you know most of the major master distillers’ names then the information itself in this movie is something you already know, but it was very well-made.

So those that have seen it; is it worth buying or would a 1 time viewing be enough for you?

A one time viewing was adequate for me.

With all due respect to Jimmy Russell, that Marianne Barnes is just cuter than a button!     ;)

  • 4 weeks later...

Finally watched it tonight.  Enjoyed it.  Nothing new that caused an epiphany or anything, but it was worth the watch.

Thanks. Since asking I rented it. It's good but I thought the constant background music gave it a melodramatic feel.

I enjoyed the movie for the most part, but that part about the guy with the bar in his basement was pointless.

  • 1 year later...

Just got around to seeing it (free on Hulu now), and had to stop when Steve Zahn said that BIB must be bottled in glass.  Huh?  I spent 30 minutes trying to find where that is stipulated.  Granted - in 1897, there weren't plastic bottles, and I can't think of an example of a BIB whiskey bottled in plastic.  But I also couldn't find any legal basis to say you couldn't do that.

Thoroughly enjoyed it.  Beautifully shot.  Kept looking for any SB'ers that I've met (looked like @cowdery was tagging along on the archaeology segment, which while short I really enjoyed).  Freddie was great (unsurprising to those who have been on his tour).  Don't know if I learned anything 'new', but enjoyed it all the same (and if I were new, it would be a nice intro that isn't heavy on the 'facts' but what's important - enjoying it with family and friends).

Only downside is now I really want to sip some bourbon, but pre-9am is a bit early :)

Hey Gary, MC family size is in plastic. And I'm pretty sure a few of the HH bonded bourbons in the family size bottles are plastic.

I watched it when it first came out, then I was scrolling Hulu last night and decided to watch it again. I agree that there's not much new for those of us that are already enthusiasts. I also agree that it was very well put together.
