What Rye are you Drinking/Purchase (2020)

This popped into my head, so went into the bunker to grab and open this Hochstadter’s.  Tasty this one is.  There was a lower proof version, but this is the 100 proof Rock & Rye.  Basically, a pre-made old fashioned with 6 year old rye, rock candy, bitters, honey and oranges.  Good stuff on the rocks.  Stay safe all.

Whistle Pig Private Selection from LOWC.  A pick from a couple of years ago.  Solid, deeply flavorful rye.  If I had to guess, I’d say Alberta over MGP.  Mark goes by his palate not by provenance.  I’d like all the information that he discards, but I have learned to respect his picks.

Rough day at work today. Decided to check out a LS I had never been to before. The shelf was devoid of anything even remotely good. But up on the shelf behind the counter was a bottle of my beloved lock stock and barrel 13.  Needless to say it came home with me.

I don't think I liked that as much as I would have liked.

 

Am I the only who thinks 1) it doesn't really taste like a rye, 2) it's sweetness on sweetness, 3) I now know what creme brulee, or a cake could taste like in liquid form, 4) the essence of caramel and vanilla. 

 

It may be OK now and then but is not my go-to when I want a rye that's for sure.

I totally agree. If it wasn't for my wife enjoying it in her coffee it would have been a drain pour. Definitely on my list of bottles to avoid. It is expensive though.

I’m with you on this.  It’s more liqueur tasting than it should be.  I so wanted to like it, that I’m sure my first couple tastes were...”positive”.  But, that wore off quickly.  It has its place, but not on any semblance of something that represents the rye category.

Nope, totally agree with 1-3 but may be a bit iffy on #4

So I cracked a wheel horse rye today. A total impulse buy. It was in my proof range and price range for a daily so I figured why not. My first impression was awful. Opening the bottle smelled of burnt copper and garden hose. Then a perfectly fine whiskey. Sweet caremel followed by caramel and oak, not complex, but enjoyably simple. I'll probably add it to the daily rotation. I'd recommend it if you can get over the first nose of an fresh bottle. Proof is 101. Age statement is of two years. Must be something going on there to get the taste... And smell.

Opened a fresh Sazerac Rye tonight for manhattans.  It’s ok, but I prefer bourbon in my manhattan.

Wife wanted rye though, so...

here we are.

After opening and tasting my first bottle, I went back and picked up a couple of spare bottles of the new Pinhook High Proof Rye.  It was much better than I was expecting.  Also, I received a bottle of Angels Envy Finished Rye as a gift from the manager.  He had known that even though I do not like regular AE, I had not tried the finished rye.  Will get around to opening that bottle this weekend and seeing what I think.

Whenever you get around to it (no rush) let me know how that Wheel Horse is.  I've been wondering about it.  I haven't heard about the whiskey yet, but I do know there used to a fine garden tractor made by that name in South Bend Indiana back in the day.  Not kidding, just a personal fan, that's all.

Oops just read this upthread after I asked for feedback on the Wheel Horse.  Thanks for the tasting notes!

The WT101R was working so well, my first reaction was to just go for another pour of that.  But my eye caught the open bottle of Cornerstone, so grabbed that one.  Not disappointed with the choice.  But I could see me going back to the 101 to close out the night.

I really liked the cornerstone... A lot... But I always find myself recently letting it sit on the shelf in favor of a bottle I'm going to get first. When I buy the cornerstone I'll know this mini glut is over.

Under appreciated, IMHO. Probably due to the age. I have a few bottles, it is pretty good. 

I am anxiously awaiting this distillate at 6-8 yrs.
