The box ALWAYS adds another 5% of enjoyment per pour.

Some guys (and gals) like how the box tastes.

Other guys (and gals) don’t care for the box at all.

Wait.....what are we talking about?

Even though it was supposed to be on the shelves at one place here three weeks ago, it still hasn’t showed up yet Jeff. I stopped at a couple of places on the way home from visiting Galvin0791 earlier today. One place had no clue at all what Old Tub even was. The other said it looked like they are scheduled to get some in November. WTF?

All good things come to those that wait. ? We are still waiting on a lot of other things in our area, so I was actually happily surprised when the Old Tub showed up! Many Beam products are known for their nutty taste profile, but this has got to be the nuttiest I’ve ever tasted.

I really like the Old Tub. Bought another two bottles after trying it. And just today got a bottle of the Repeal Batch—will try it tonight!

I'm just tasting Old Tub for the first time.  So far, no real surprises.  It's 100 proof Beam, non chill filtered, doesn't taste much older than four years.  First impression is it's an improvement over Jim Beam Bonded.  I usually like to visit a new bottle on several different occasions before I make too many pronouncements.  At this point, I'd probably like at least one unopened bottle for the bottled in bond section of the bunker.

Well, at least those of us in CA have something we can gloat about; all these Beam products seem readily available here.  Some consolation for not being able to get ET BIB and some of the "Kentucky-only" bottles.

I bought  Distiller's Cut yesterday (2017, in the box version) for $18.99 and there was plenty of Repeal Batch, Old Tub, etc.  I don't think any of these higher-proof, $20-ish Beam products will be good enough or different enough to replace Knob Creek for me, though.  My first pour of DC had more burn and less flavor than KC.  I may do a SBS of the Distiller's Cut and the NAS KC tonight.

Ok, so I just did a blind SBS of the Distiller's Cut and my NAS Knob Creek.  I love my Knob Creek and if you are a 90-120 proof Beam product, you have a tough job going up against the favorite.  I just opened the DC yesterday and the KC (1.75l) is about half-full and has been open for at least 4 months.  I poured each one, mixed them around like 3-card Monte, and let them sit for about 15 minutes.  I will concede that I have a crap nose and palate as far as picking out specific motes like "stewed summer fruits" and the like.  My results depend on whether I trust my nose and palate more than my pouring in the right glasses.

Succinctly, the first round went (almost) exactly as I expected.  Glass A was immediately familiar on the nose and palate as Knob Creek (of which I have had my share) and Glass B was very similar, just with a bit more ethanol and a bit less richness of flavor, like Glass A's younger, less experienced cousin.  I nailed it.  Til I turned the glasses over and A had a "D" on the bottom and Glass B had a "K."

I was so stunned I was convinced I had poured them wrong so I did the test again, paying close attention to which bottle went into which glass. before mixing them up.  When I repeated the test, my perceptions were exactly the same, but this time A was indeed KC and B was DC. This convinced me that I had poured wrong the first time.

So without getting into "the pineapple note in KC was like a crushed pineapple but in DC it was more like a strained pineapple," I will say that:

1) The DC was significantly better last night's neck pour.  It definitely benefited from sitting in the glass for 10-15 minutes and will probably improve as it opens up in the bottle.

2) They definitely taste like cousins.  The KC was a little less hot and a little richer in flavor while the DC drank a little hotter and the flavors were, well, lighter and brighter is the best I can describe it.

I look forward to the DC as it opens up and would not count it a fail at all, as much as I love KC.   Not the most in-depth review, but there it is.  If I ever buy some of the other Beam 90-120-proof offerings I will do another blind.

Well said but what about the "marzipan" note?... ?

Well, the DC had a marzipan note like from the end of the piece, but the KC note was more like from the middle of the piece.  Totally different

After I tasted Old Tub on several occasions, the verdict is - it tastes too much like young whiskey, not my favorite Beam product.  Around mid palate, I get this tartness, like plain Greek yogurt, then a flavor like raw biscuit dough.  It seems to have not aged enough in the barrel to loose those white dog characteristics completely.

As they say, your mileage may vary.

Generally speaking, young Beam gives me similar notes so I avoid it.

  • 5 weeks later...

I'm sitting on 12 bottles of DC, and am happy with it.  I don't get the peanut notes from it like I do BIB, so Old Tub will have to get taste tested before I buy.  I really disliked Repeal, so I'll hope DC becomes permanent in my area.

Just did a SBS between these two and have to say I like the Old Tub more.  Not the same peanut-forward profile I'm used to from Beam, can't put my finger on it.  Not that DC is bad, just nothing remarkable.

Big fan of DC, which hasn't been seen around here in a long time, so was looking forward to Old Tub. Finally showed up at my LS today...for 29.99 +tax. Will be sticking with KC9, which I get for a dollar cheaper. Maybe they'll drop the price, maybe not...who knows...maybe I'll cave just to try it.

It seems to me that complaining that DC or OT is not as good as KC is like noticing that a Chevy Impala is not a Buick even though there is a family similarity. Do I prefer KC? Hell yes. Will I drink DC at way under $20?  Hell yes!

On the last trip or two thru KY (July or Aug, can't remember which trip) was surprised by and brought back a few more DC from TW (again L-ville or Lex, can't remember which, went thru 1 each trip), plenty on shelf at the time.  IMHO, DC is noticeably better/less alcohol bite than OT (brought that back as well).  I'd take DC every day of the week and twice on Sunday over OT at $5 more, but also wouldn't refuse OT on occasion once/if DC is really history.
