What if someone is a flipper and a jerk driver.

I bet there is a lot of overlap.

And leaves shopping carts in the middle of the parking lot instead of putting them in the corrals.

Just tell them?

Bob, I so want to hate on what transpired there in what you described, but I look inward and and to other “good” folks (like I think I might be, but am not) and see similar things, but under different and supposedly more righteous pretexts.  I just can’t totally make that break between Good and Evil...I am not endorsing this behavior, but it would be disingenuous for most of us to totally vilify it, lest we all be guilty.

evil, vilify?  I guess I hadn't realized things had gotten so serious ?

I usually buy three bottles, a bottom shelf, or mid shelf, and two of a new selection.  I buy the pair to drink and save, or drink and donate.  If there are no new selections, I'll still buy three, two bottom shelves and a mid shelf, or vise versa.  I guess I'm practicing some restraint for a change.

I'm generally too broke to be part of the problem. I'm also not really into collecting things. It's very rare that I have more than one bottle of something on my bar, and it's also rare that anything on my bar would be unopened. Basically, I just buy what I can when I can, with the intent to open it up and drink it soon after. When it's gone, I'll just find something else to try... never been a problem in 20+ years of drinking bourbon.

I'm generally in 100% agreement that folks who's only intent is to get rare bottles so they can flip them for a substantial profit, and never actually drink & enjoy them, are a large part of the problem. I also think the folks on the opposite end of those transactions should bare some of the blame. If you are out there spending absurd amounts by outbidding everyone on a bottle & paying 3-5x or more of the srp, just so you can post it on social media and/or have it on a shelf like a trophy rather than actually drinking it, you are definitely not helping the situation IMO.

Then again, in certain scenarios I can't say I wouldn't be tempted to unload a bottle I knew could fetch a pretty penny. I live in a control state, in a county that doles out their BTAC allotment via lottery. When you sign up for the lottery, you're signing up for the overall lottery, not for any specific item. So you really don't have any say over what you might win the chance to purchase. I would personally love the chance to get some things I've never had before at msrp, like WLW, GTS, etc., so I could drink them, but I truly don't have a ton of interest in Pappy. A friend's bar won the lottery a few years back and got a bottle of PVW23. I tried it, I liked it, but it didn't blow my mind or anything to the point where I was longing for it... and again, I'm not a collector, I do a pretty good job of fighting off the hypebeasts and I'm not buying bourbon for some kind of strange validation from others... so I just don't feel a huge need to have a bottle of Pappy on my shelf.

But let's say they pulled my name for the PVW23 & I spent the $300 it costs here to get it...

Knowing someone who really wants it way more than I do would be happily willing to pay me something like $1200 or more for that bottle, I'd be hard pressed not to play Let's Make a Deal. In that scenario, they are getting something they want & is special to them, while I'd be in a position to purchase a ton of bottles I'm genuinely interested in trying with the $1200 vs. having a bottle for $300 that I'm not really all that crazy about. Is that really such a bad thing, especially if all that money combined is going right back into that same ABC store anyhow?

That seems pretty reasonable to me, but I suppose it does kinda go against the points I made in my second paragraph. That said, as another poster mentioned earlier, it all comes down to intent & if my intent is to flip it in order to invest more money in the store & buy things I probably wouldn't be able to buy & try until much later over a longer period of time, I think that could be an instance where flipping a bottle wouldn't necessarily cement me a front row seat in the fiery pits of bourbon hell.
