Been loving this one lately.

 

2.5 oz EW 1783

0.5 Kahlua 

2 dashes Angastura Cocoa Bittets orange twist

A bit of a rif on an American Trilogy.  Used maple syrup in place of regular simple syrup.  A little sweet, so I might be able to dial back on the maple just a bit.

 

1 oz WT 101 rye

1 oz Laird's Apple Brandy

0.5 oz maple syrup

3-4 dashes orange bitters

Orange twist

Wanted a good bourbon Manhattan tonight and tried something new.


I also learned something:

 

Weller doesn’t make a good manhattan.

I think it’s the lack of spice.  The weller just gets totally lost in this.

Oh well.  Gotta try new things periodically.

Went with a variation of a Vieux Carré, Early Times, cognac, sweet vermouth, green chartreuse, pechards and lemon twist.  Was ok, but changed out the whiskey to ECBP and the green chartreuse with Drambuie on the next one and found a keeper.  Cheers!

Tried a new cocktail today, the Man-O-War.  

 

2 oz bourbon

0.75 oz Pierre Ferrand Curacao

0.5 sweet vermouth

0.5 oz lemon juice

Lemon twist and cherry garnish

 

This was quite good.  Need to play with the lemon juice a bit.  I think it could be good with rye as well.

I'm trying that with some Still 630 rye & Still 630 brandy!

I've never had a good Manhattan with lower proof wheated bourbon.   Not a fan of them in Old-Fashioneds either.

MM101 makes a great old fashioned.  Guess it's not low proof though.

This is where some bottled in bond brands work well.  Higher rye recipe Bourbon holds its' own with the other ingredients.

Absolutely.
Mrs. Skinsfan and I  prefer rye in  an Old Fashioned.  If we want something a little sweeter,  I'll reach for the WT101 or the OGD114

Found a recipe for a Butter Pecan Old Fashioned on the Barton's website. Making an infusion of butter, brown sugar, vanilla and toasted pecans mixed w/a 750 ml bottle of 1792 Small Batch. Its finishing in the fridge now. Thought this could be a great Thanksgiving sipper w/the family this year.

I have a praline/pecan liqueur by Evangeline's that is just right for old fashioneds, if you can't wait...

Made a Vieux Carre tonight.  I used Old Overholt which I find does a pretty good in cocktails.  Ever since they changed to the 86 proof I've been making more and more cocktails with it.  In some ways I like it more than the bonded or 114 proof for cocktails.

Since the wife is not a big brown liquor drinker, I tried to find a seasonal cocktail we both would enjoy using bourbon.  This was very good!  And quaffable!  I did make some notes/adjustments, still fine tuning.

 

A

Apple Cider Whiskey Smash:

  •  2 oz. Whiskey - I used OF 100 proof.
  • 3-4 Mint Leaves
  • 1/2 oz. Cinnamon Simple Syrup - made a simple syrup w/ 1 diced honeycrisp apple, ground cinnamon, and thyme leaves, let cool, then strained twice.
  • 1/2 oz. Lemon, juiced
  • 4 oz. Apple Cider - I used Trader Joe's unfiltered Honeycrisp Apple cider.
  • Ice

 

Muddle- mint/simple syrup/lemon, add bourbon, cider, ice, Shake and pour over ice

Wife had literally one shot of Aperol left in this bottle, so I decided to end it with a paper plane.

 

1 shot, or otherwise equal parts:

-Aperol

-Amaro Nonino

-Fresh Lemon 🍋 Juice

-Bourbon 🥃

 

Combine all the above in a shaker with ice and shake until chilled.

Strain into a glass (coupe is the preferred, but I’m accident prone)

 

Delicious!

Looking to use up some neglected orgeat in the fridge, I settled on a Charo's Kick via Imbibe.  Discovered the orgeat was past its due date only after the tequila and mezcal and lemon juice were in the shaker.  Reached for the back-of-the-fridge pineapple gum and decided that it too was drain-worthy.  So I finally ended up subbing burnt sugar syrup for orgeat to create what I'm calling Charo's Brunette Cousin.  Or maybe Charo's Cuchi-Cuchi.    I really like this but as I adolesced in the 70's, I may be biased.

 

1 1/2 oz blanco tequila

1/2 oz mezcal

3/4 oz lemon juice

3/4 oz burnt sugar syrup

2 barspoons creme de menthe

 

Ice. Shake. Strain.  Up.

I love it! I mixed: 2 oz of the infused bourbon, 2 oz of 1792 small batch and 1 oz of traditional Proof Syrup for the best results!
