I have a friend who works at a small distillery and talked me into driving out for a tasting. Well, 2 bourbons, a whiskey and some bourbon barrel aged honey followed me home.

Wood Hat is named after one of the owners hobbies, making hats out of wood. He only has one yellow corn recipe that he calls Montgomery County, and it has a MM feel. Otherwise he uses red or blue heirloom corn that he grows. He’s got others in the works as well.

The Aged Blue Corn whiskey is the smoothest whiskey on the table. With a sweet front, it finishes like no other. It’s aged in toasted oak.

The Bloody Dapper is red corn, spicy and woody. It’s the most robust of my picks.

The Twin Timbers is rested in pecan barrels after oak aging. This one is blue corn based, it’s their Rubenisque rested. Sweet and mild, it’s their most award winning pour.

Been away a while.  Got a call just before labor day that they found my Brother in law unresponsive at home (he is a diabetic and has end stage renal disease).  We had to make a mad drive from Michigan back to North Louisiana.  To make this to the point, he is in a  persistent vegetative state and has been moved to hospice.  We will go  back in October to make a final decision.  Had no opportunity for bourbon while I was away but had a bit of Kentucky Owl after I got back.   He left no will or directions so my wife is having to sort everything out.  It is  a bit more complicated as Louisiana law is based on French law rather than English law.  Very stressful situation.

Prayers for you all.

Picked up two more WTRB and two more Calumet 15.

Checked the Total Wine website this morning because I heard that the Calumet 16 was in stock. $155 for it. The 14yr continues to be priced at $125 and the 15yr is still inexplicably priced at $100. So I passed on the 16 in favor of the 15.

While browsing I did my usual search for RRSiB, WTRB, and KCSiB since they have basically been MIA for more than a year. They had WTRB so I ordered 2. As usual, you have to wait for the "your order is ready" email before you know for sure you got it. RRSiB has shown up twice recently and I ordered both times only to get the "we don't actually have this" email. Success this time and when I went to pick up the order I browsed the bourbon aisle first and the WTRB was already out of stock as well as the Calumet 16.

Sorry you guys are going through this. Prayers for you both.

Picked up a Baker’s SiB. I haven’t purchased a Baker’s since the shift from small batch to single barrel.I have quite a few small batch bottles bunkered, so I haven’t had FOMO. But today,  I came across an 8 yr, so I pulled the trigger. Probably, curiosity got the better of me. I wonder how it will stack up to the old wine bottles. We shall see.

Cheers

Let us know! I held out for a while and then finally took the plunge. My first one was good. My second one was awful. I am now out on this until further notice.

Will do. I will open an older Baker’s and do a comparo. On first impression, this Bakers is reminiscent of the old Bakers, good viscosity, no overpowering nut notes, some fruit, balanced.  A good pour. More research on the horizon.

Cheers

Well done,

Those two would be a couple I always recommend, and keep in my rotation.

They represent the diversity of Bourbon.

That, the standard version of Four Roses has all ten of their recipes in the batch, including some much older barrels.  So far, it's the only 80 proofer I know worth drinking by itself.

And Wild Turkey is Wild Turkey. 🦃

I found this on the porch when I took the dog out before bed.  I opened the box this morning.  By the descriptions, one is top floor with a lot of temperature movement in the barrel.  The second is bottom floor with minimal fluctuations .  Both come in around 109.4 proof.  I look forward to a comparison.

Finally finished my JM Cigar Blend purchases with a haul of one (1) Batch 89 and two (2!) Batch 99s.  @Whiskey Bender - names of the batches, please.  And any other info that you may have in your notes.  Thanks, Nancy.   😋

Yes another "whiskey bender" case of mistaken identify? 🙃

You meant Whiskey Blender I know!

When I was in the Army, we had a guy in our unit that was second generation Polish. He could give you a compliment or curse your momma and you couldn’t tell the difference. He was actually a really great guy. I just wish I’d have paid more attention when he gave us “language lessons”. 😉 Of course my memory is a little suspect too. 🫥

I do but this is a subscription service through Makers Mark that ships two bottles to subscribers each quarter.

Very nice indeed.

I was not aware of such a thing.  They probably can't ship to Ohio so that would leave me out.

Love the label.

Hate the price.

I love WT, and most iterations of it, but have yet to have tasted any Kentucky Spirit that is worth the extra $$ over the standard offering.

How was it?

A buddy of mine cracked open their latest and we liked it.   It's been a while since I've had the older stuff, so I don't know how it compares.

Bought the JD Triple Mash and cracked it today. First sip neat. I think it's pretty good stuff! I also bought the JD Barrel Strength, which is a more pricey bottle here in Deutscheländ, but this one remains closed til the weekend. Will report though! (I was inspired by the thread here on SB about this expression and wanted to buy for a long time, but was never sure, because JD, you know ...)

They definitely exist, I can assure you.  But I agree that it's probably not worth the gamble unless you can taste a sample from a specific barrel first.

Those must be the 2022 versions of the series?  Nice.

Agreed.

I tried, (and purchased), one a couple years ago.

I was finally within a reasonable distance of K7L in Hollywood today.  I picked up a couple of bourbon store picks:  A New Riff bourbon and a Clyde Mays (6-yr-old MGP).  So many other bottles I would have loved to buy.
