I’ll never forget seeing Fred Noe at Kurtz restaurant In Bardstown one time. Fred and his wife were leaving at the same time as a few of us SBers. There was a bottle of Toogies Batch sitting on the credenza in the entry way just across from the checkout counter. We were talking about it when I commented/asked  “I wonder who Toogie is?” Fred overheard me and nodded towards the lady behind the counter as he said, “Hell, you just met her.”  We all had a good laugh. Toogie included.  Every time I’ve seen her, shes always had a smile on her face. That day she was grinning from ear to ear.  Good stuff.

Kurtz was Fred’s favorite restaurant in Bardstown. Saw him there two or three times.

Listening to some continuing legal ed, it's mandatory for my licensing. Such content should only be absorbed with alcohol.

 

Went back to the Sam Houston 15. One of you previously commented to the effect of "what?" last time I posted this bottle, perhaps in the vein of "what NDP tater juice did you go and overpay for?". Never can tell with short comments on the internet, context is often lost.

 

Anyway, I did a little Googling. It's Barton. Will compare it to Calumet 15. Per the bourbonculture person(s), the SH15 beats the Calumet. Will need to compare. Got the first bottle for $100 at Sam's, the 2nd as a gift, will need to compare them for they are different batches. These guys put out small batches, evidently 3 barrels. I liked it a good bit last time. And it's making "learnin' some law" easier. A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down...

I believe you are correct in the source but I have been told that BBC has a hand in the aging/blending of several of their lines.  
They also operate as Three Springs Bottling and are located about 100 yards away from one of my regular liquor stores.

Uncorked a 'new' Old Grand Dad 114.   Been a minute since I poured any of this fine Bourbon.    Besides being a somewhat unique profile for Beam products, it's also a pretty good value pour, especially as it's so delicious!

It disappeared for a minute.  But, it is back at a slightly higher price, $26.99.  Might be time to pick a bottle as this price isn't much different than OGDBIB and the bottle is much cooler.

I had to go to Collinsville, IL (Dean's Liquors) last month to get my restock of OGD114!  Woulda' been cheaper to drive to Maine (damn Illinois sales tax - totally unAmerican.  )

Three of us compared Sam Houston 15 and Calumet 15 a couple of years ago, and they were very close but Calumet won by a nose (see what I did there?).  Of course, as you mention, both bottles are produced in small batches so each comparison would be different.  I think you can't go wrong either way.

I haven't tried the Calumet 14.  I like the 15 and 16 but have not done a SBS (now I know what I am doing tonight!) 

 

Worth the spend?  Good question.  People use the "$10 per year of age" thing but I think that is a VERY loose standard with KC9 and ER 10 selling in the $30 range and some 4-6-yr old "latest greatest" selling for $150 or more.  For me, Calumet and SH occupy a space similar to Remus V--moderate proof sippers with a lot of complexity, age, and depth that are a cut above many other bottles.  I can still find 15 for $110 and consider it a good buy.  16 seems to have settled around $140-plus and I definitely think it is worth owning a bottle, I don't know if I would make repeat buys or bunker it.

 

If my financial situation was such that $140 was my every day sipper price range (instead of $30 lol), I would probably buy it all day long.

I've only had the 14 and I'm on my 2nd bottle.

I like it enough that even my cheap-ass would buy another on, (on sale, of course)  I think that I paid ~ $114 OTD ea, at the Navy package store for the bottles that I bought.

Mrs. Skinsfan likes it a lot.  For whatever reason, her tastes do tend to gravitate towards the pricier stuff but, as she's my Chief Enabler, who am I to complain?

I'm hoping that I get a revelation the next time I revisit the Old Forester Single Barrel Barrel Strength.

In my limited experience, I didn't like the 1st-2/3 of the bottle. The last 3rd, I couldn't believe how good it was!!!

Haven't tried again...

Had a couple BS-OF & ended up blending both to lessen the proof & the profile. They became pretty good after that. Not impressed before the blending.

Bought a case (2 at a time) of the OF SiB 100pf & still have 1 left in the bunker. Thought that was waaaaaaay better!!!!
