What Bourbon Did You Pass On 2024

I don't think they are under the radar for the bourbon crowd anymore. I do agree they aren't a consideration for the average 80p Jack drinkers, but nothing over $30 is.

You're probably right.

It's still easy enough to find around here, (Baltimore metro area) and still reasonably priced.  I have a couple open bottles of both, and a few squirreled away. Like you, I buy it to drink. I don't drunk as much high test whiskey anymore, so what I have should last for a very long time.

As long as they leave the OGD114 and WT101 on the shelves, and reasonably priced, I'll be a happy camper....

I guess that somewhat makes up for the bonded rye pricing, especially in those reprehensible 700cl bottles.

...

I'd like to have a 700 cl bottle of JD Bonded, lol

My local usually saves me one, once per year.  I think the last one was $45.  Previously they were holding at 39.99 for several years.  I'll take this over Blanton's every day of the week and twice on Sundays! Well, no liquor can be bought on Sundays in Texas, but, er, you get the idea 😁

I miss Elmer. 🙁

Very quiet and unassuming man. This was at the KBF in 2009 I believe. He was there watching the barrel races. Back then, a few current and  former master distillers could be found on the grounds of the KBF. Not sure if that is still the case or not.

Met Elmer at the Whiskey Fest in Chicago late 90’s.  We shared a drink and talked about how a little water added to bourbon “open’s up” the flavors.  Small man that had a quiet voice but earned your respect!

RR 15 - $299

Blanton's - $160

EHT SB - $129 (thought about it but just couldn't)

EHT SiB - $239

I buy quite a bit from this store, but mostly the usual at decent prices. VOB, OGD, BBC Origin and such.

I am sure I would have bit the bullet and bought  the RR 15 for $300.  The RR 13 is so good that I would pay dearly to taste what two more years tastes like:}

I passed on Old Fo SiB BP pick at $67.99.   Good price for that one compared to other times I've purchased it, but to me it's still overpriced for a NAS bourbon (probably 5-6 yrs old).  IMO their store picks are perhaps the most overpriced bourbons out there when you consider age in the barrel.

I'll take the same exact bourbon at this brand's perfect proof (115) for $15-17 less all day long.... (OF 1920).

Yes, it is good seeing store picks of FRBP showing up more frequently.  Unfortunately, the prices are crazy.  The going rate for most stores in Indy is $119.99.  The sell out almost immediately.

I continue to pass on a 5 year old version of a grocery store Woodinville private barrel strength pick @ 114 proof for $56.99.  That is a good price compared to LS's which are generally in the $70 range. I really like standard Woodinville and Woodinville BS but I would really like to try before I buy.  I guess I could pop it open in the grocery store and if I don't like it, which is highly unlikely, I can just put it back on the shelf.  JK.  Maybe as a Cheap Bastard, I am hoping they will knock another 20% off.

In the end, I can get a stellar KCSiB or Jeffersons store pick down the street for basically the same price so that is why it difficult to pull the trigger.

Given how much you like the regular stuff, seems like an OK price. Except to Cheap Bastards, evidently!

Jeffersons store pick

Now that's interesting. I've tried some of their Ocean stuff. Like it when I started, less so now, drinks young to me. They had a limited release, Chateau Pichon, that I really liked. How would you describe those SP's? Curious! Good enough Cheap Bastard....

I'd have snapped that one up. But I agree with the Bourbon Culture guy who says that's where secondary will be circa December-January. He felt too many barrels were produced for it to be otherwise and we are still in the initial FOMO hype phase. He's usually right.

I will eventually break down on the Woodinville.  I am a weak Cheap Bastard.

Jeffersons is a different story.  Jefferson's can be all over the place.  However, the local store pick that I tried was really good!  I will end up a bottle or two.

All the recent talk in the "Ongoing observations" thread about 4RSBBP store picks ties into this thread very neatly for me.  My favorite local LS has another of these, at the normal price for such things, $100.  9 year, 5 month OBSK.  I forget the proof.

I passed the first time they had one of these, and they had no trouble unloading them rather quickly without my help.

It might sound like quibbling, but I'm pretty sure I would have made the purchase at $70 to $80.  And I'm also sure they won't be leaving an extra 20 to 30 bucks on the table when there are still plenty of folks willing to throw it at them.  So here we sit.  And it's fine with me.  Sooner or later, people stop collecting Beanie Babies and they're all worth $5 again.

In all fairness & to speak of only "here", I am seeing things show up that never stood a chance of visiting. It looks to me like a change is at hand but prices are still attempted at a premium while they can be gotten. I'm hoping they start sitting there awhile...

I'm weaker.

It's my 2nd bottle.  Well.... my first bottle.  Or is it my 2nd??

Okay...the liquid is 2nd Woodinvile that I decanted into this one, because the etched bottle looks so damn good.😅

Both were picks, so I don't know how they stack up against the standard offerings.

Each bottle had similar profiles...pure cherry cola.

Based on these alone, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another..

I can answer this question. The distillery itself is 8 miles from my house and I've done multiple private picks of both the bourbon and rye.

I've also done the on site open to the public event where you taste from three barrels and then fill a bottle of your favorite to take home.

And, I've tasted numerous cask strength offerings at the tasting bar.

In every single instance I've thought the cask strength offerings were better than the standard offering. They seem to really make sure the barrels chosen for those are a cut above.

I passed on another 4R SiB PS priced at $100 last weekend.  This time it was a ten year OBSO.
