Last night I had ETL... After buying the bottle a couple of months ago I enjoyed it so much I though I'd buy a bottle for my son-in-law for his birthday. His description was interesting...he described it as "tart" and compared the taste to Knob Creek. I would describe the taste of ETL as a little citrus-y and only slightly sweet...but he may be comparing the taste to his long-time favorite, Maker's Mark.

Well with the girls it was a eight and a half hour drive tonight. We got to the U.P. and I had a nice pour of Vintage 17 year old and now a heavy pour of some Weller 12 yr I bought back in 2004 in Lexington. Man is that 12 good! May have some 2003 OFBB next, we'll see it's gettin late!

Cheers!

Last night was some Canadian Club 15yo.

After drinking Scotch and/or Irish for several eves in a row, it reminded me how much closer Canadian whisky is to American straights (in flavor, not method of production).

It also reminded me how much I like this particular whisky. It's been a while since I last had any. It's my last bottle and I've been hoarding it.

So far JDSS and OGD114 with the later tasting better than ever. Very individual stile dry, spicy and lots of citrus.

An Old-Fashioned (surely THE American whiskey cocktail).

I built it like this. I took a finger of vatted bourbons and put them in a Waterford glass. I added some Collins Orange Bitters and some Peychaud's. Then I added half a teaspoon of brown sugar.

After swirling well, some cubes went in and a splash of water to display those bourbons and reduce the drink to a decent proof level if you see what I mean.

The result is a civilized whiskey cocktail of great savor. In sampling this, it comes to mind that the Manhattan was probably a way originally to fashion quickly a, well, Old-Fashioned.

Could be a Booker's night here. The high proof puts me off a little, but I just can't bring myself to ice or cut it. It's delicious stuff.

Cheers!

Now on to some EV23yr... good taste with a changing finish... by 30 seconds it has strong oak... but it works well with this bourbon... It would have probably been better at a 20-21 yr

Decided on the Booker's. Damn, this stuff is hot! Approached with caution, this is truly a fine pour. The burn hits me hard at first but the flavor prevails. Well done, JB!

Cheers!

PS- Brad, how did you do the ribeyes? I did some fat T bones the other night over a mix of hickory and mesquite along with some generous pours of ERSB.

The best steak I've had all year. The ER didn't hurt, either.

Cheers!

Enjoyed a pour of Weller Centennial, a 13 year bottling from Julio's.

I had a number of rounds of WT101 and Coke Zero at a party this evening before enjoying a beautiful night at the ballpark watching the Tribe finally get off the schnide against the Rangers.

I opened my Weller Centennial when I got home and I think I'm going to like this stuff. Since this is the first time I've ever laid eyes on a bottle of Centennial, how can I tell it's lineage? The label says Centennial 10 Years Old and W.L. Weller and Sons in Frankfort. Under the neck band, there's a printed 4327 above a 22:25. Could that simply mean that it was bottled on 3/27/04 at 10:25PM? That puts the distillation date at 1994 at the latest.

Then again, I just could be FOS with my investigation abilities.

Last evening I celebrated my wife's birthday at Ruth's Chris with her family. I enjoyed a pour of Booker's neat, then finished off a Knob Creek and Coke that the birthday girl gave up on. She usually really enjoys such a drink, but I wasn't going to give her any grief, as I was the recipient of the leftovers. :)
