...Bernard De Voto...

You scare me sometimes, Gary. I suspect few on this board besides you and I know de Voto, who finished his Journals of Lewis & Clark not long before his death. I read Ambrose's Undaunted Courage while laid up three months after having my colon removed, and subsequently purchased de Voto's book on the "history's greatest camping trip"'s record. Today's gas prices make the echo voyage less likely, but who knows? Still a dream...

Anyway, de Voto said:

"Let us candidly admit that there are shameful blemishes on the American past, of which the worst by far is rum. Nevertheless, we have improved man's lot and enriched his civilization with rye, bourbon and the Martini cocktail. In all history has any other nation done so much?"

Rebel Yell 90 1985

We attended a summertime picnic three years ago held in memory of a beloved friend and neighbor, Miss Sandra (who preferred that her life be celebrated rather than mourned). At the bar, when we asked for bourbon, we were offered a pour of Rebel Yell. Assuming we were being given the current version, we were floored by an explosion of the bourbon flavors we love. To my (Dave's) recollection, I think butter, caramel, toffee, vanilla. That may seem elementary, but those were the flavors that drew me to bourbon years ago. When we asked to see the bottle, we realized it was a tax stamped late 80's RY that had been gathering dust. To this day, I wonder if Miss Sandra was looking down on us and guided us to a special treat.

With that, I'm wondering what your impressions were without all of the psychological overlay we carry regarding 80's era Rebel Yell.

Booker's cut to about 110 proof. I taste Knob Creek with more spice and an expected increase in the burn.

OK, so you can't leave us hanging with that morsel; how was it?
