Clontarf Irish Single Malt. ... young, super-pale, more bite than other Irish whiskeys I've had. I like it, we like it. Goes good with U2's Joshua Tree played medium loud... very nice, a movie without the visual parts.

About two years ago a friend of mine gave me a cool "bottle" of Clontarf that was actually three bottles in one (each 250ml) that stacked on top of one another to create the illusion of a single bottle. It had the single malt, a blend and one other that I can't remember. Not bad at all for $20-ish and the last time I saw it, the stuff came in a litre bottle which adds value for dollar (yen).

Uniquely, Clontarf uses the Jack Daniels method of filtering the new make whisky through a vat of charcoal before aging in the barrel. Can't say that I really tasted that in the three expressions (Gold Label, Black Label and Single Malt) my friends and I shared. Next time I get a chance I'll look for it.

Trying the Balvenie DoubleWood tonight. Ummmm juicy. Super pleasant and agreeable pour. Got a feeling that this one will be tough to be for the price. That being said...you all steered me right with your Islay recs, what else would you offer up along these lines?

Balvenie DoubleWood was one of my gateway favorites into the world of whisky. I still love it all these years later and always have a bottle on hand. You may want to check out Aberlour 12 and Old Pulteney 12. They obviously don't taste alike (what would be the point, right?) but they are also easy drinkers with real character.

I find the Aberlour A'Bunadh is a nice change of pace at cask strength and a great sherry profile,it is also one I find to be a great value in the SMS world.

I'm also a big fan of the A'bunadh range. I've enjoyed the 39, 32, and 41, in that order, but liked them all. Any Glenfarclas 15 years or older is a dynamite sherry Speysider. The 105 cask strength as well. When I think "super pleasant and agreeable pour" Glenfiddich 15 year solera jumps to the front of my mind. Give the Bruichladdich Laddie Ten a consideration as well.

Thanks for the suggestions, boyos. The Aberlour cask strength is talking to me, but I'll keep all of these gems in mind. For now though, on to the Lag 16.

As far as sherried scotch goes, the Glendronach 15 I had this past weekend is tasty but may have a lower QPR than the A'Bunadh

ChainWhip, I saw that you're on a CB kick. Have you had a chance with the Flaming Heart 4th edition? I opened one a few weeks ago and it really took my breath away. I'm seeking a few extras before they disappear.

@Yeti: not yet. I'm working through a sampler pack and just finished off my bottle of CB Eleuthera. I may have to snag a bottle of the FH to keep this streak going (believe me, it's no chore at all).

:-)

Started off with a G&M Mortlach 15 yr . . . not my thing. It is cloyingly sweet and one dimensional. To me, this stuff is better off as a JW component.

I've now switched to the Laddie 10, which is fantastic as always. This and the HP12 are my favorite every day scotches. I never get tired of either.

Old Pulteney 12 and 17 made they way home yesterday, the latter to be opened as part of a friend's 70th birthday celebration. I wish that I had also picked up the bottle of 1998 Gordon & MacPhail Old Pulteney 10 YO Unchillfiltered which I sampled at the last Binny's get-together and loved but I ran out of money buying the all the stuff for this weekend's football activities.

Having my first pour of the Nikka Yoichi 15 yo. This is some good stuff. The spice in the finish is slaying me.

Trying Highland Park 12 AND 18 for the first time ever. I bought a bottle of the 12 that came with a mini bottle of the 18. While I definitely prefer the 18, the 12 is very good.

The HP 12 is good everyday pour @43%, it would be great @46%. The 18 is bordering on great @43%, it would be spectacular above 46%
