I was taken out to a pre birthday celebration and my father in law did some homwork. Entered the bar and low and behold there was a state of SoCal bourbon and rye selections. I was able to try...

AH Hirsch 16, Michter's Rye, A Pewter Top Kentucky Spirit. They also had Blanton's but I decided to stick to what I had not already tried.

They were all unique and quite different. Found the Hirsch very dry, and the mouthfeel not at all as heavy as the age statement prepared me for. Good, but not great. Michter's Rye was sharp and spicy, as I expected it would be. The overall star was the KS.

Dinner and the company were stellar.

RR90 and Knob Creek each over one cube at dinner, then a couple pours of Vbt #128 (TBA) at home.

My first attempt at a vatting of any sort brought together a 1:1 mix of Beam Black and Elmer T. Lee this evening.

The ETL straightens out the lack of front end mouth feel of the JBB and gives it a finish worth waiting for. JBB gives it a little punch and moderates the sweetness of the ETL.

I give this two thumbs up.

Just got back from a couple of weeks out of state and found my Binny's order of FRSB had arrived safely. Having a nice big pour now and I'm truly happy!

This bottle has that cinnamon sting in spades but is still rich and balanced.

Oh yeah!

Cheers!

Still waiting for VBT#128 to be posted (and I want to save the tasting for further clarifications) so tonight has been Pale Ales from Harpoon and Bar Harbor.

I picked up a bottle of Fantome and it wasn't nearly as good as I remember it. There were bubbles in it but it felt very flat and the taste was not what I remembered, very disappointing considering the fact that I used to not be sure what my favorite beer was, Grolsch or Fantome. I think I'm going to try and return it (I doubt they will take it back) tomorrow, when I drank this stuff regularly the cork would come out with a big pop, I didn't get that with this one, it just slid out silently. Now I'm working on a Cricket Hill East Coast Lager, I was happy to see this at a local liquor store since the brewery didn't have any to sell me when I was there. After this I'm going for one of the ones I brewed. I had one last night and the extra week of priming really made a difference, it went from tasting pretty good to really good, my friend (whom I made the beer with) feels the same way. I guess now is the time to distribute these to the people I promised samples to. One thing I notice is that there is a lot of carbonation, when you push the lever on the swing top Grolsch bottles we used the cap just blows off with a loud pop, sometimes Grolsch pops but never anything near what I'm getting with these. I hope I don't wind up with any bottles exploding, especially not the growler or the magnum!

I took a 1:1:1 vatting of JBB,EWB and Ezra Brooks to a party so that could have a guilt free 375 to mix with Coke Zero.

I also took along a bottle of Lot B to break in some friends and it was liked by most who tried it. The only ones who didn't like it were the vodka crew.

Tried a "new" whiskey tonight. It sure was different. Not good. Not bad. Different. It has a taste that's familiar, but I just can't put my finger on it. I hope this will be fun at the Gazebo during KBF. :skep: Joe

A 50/50 vatting of WLWeller 12yo and Wild Turkey Rare Breed.

At first I didn't like the idea but the taste won me over.

Thanks Tony.

Staying with the WT theme from last evening I am sipping on a bit of WT Tribute. One of the more "elegant" Turkey's with a very nice finish, soft mouth feel and good complexity. I also find it a bit dryer than the American Spirit and more having more concentration of flavor than the Kentucky Spirit.

Started with some Canadian Club from a 5/4-quart bottle (you read that right -- it's a 40-oz. bottle!) vintage c. 1936 (that's what the label lists as the Royal Warrant last date, though the warrant, eventually withdrawn, continued into the reigns of Edward VIII, George VI and Elizabeth II -- thus, one assumes the label was promulgated c. 1936, or the date would be later, and label matches that era.).

It is as assertive a non-'finished' Canadian as I've ever experienced (I haven't opened my Bush Pilot's yet). Quite good with ginger ale and ice. Glad it's a big bottle:grin:.
