Today I got to Maryville MO so I was able to pick up some knob Creek. They don't carry it locally. It's one of my favorite pours so far, it's going down mighty fine.

Watching the Bears / Bucs game...pulled out another recent KY trip purchase...Old Charter 8 yr old...80 proof...

Nice nose - sweet, some caramel....

Taste..smooth, a bit thin...but a very light pleasant taste...at 80 proof..no burn. I wonder if a higher proof may add a bit more to the overall taste.

I find this very drinkable but a little to light and thin.

Back from a cruise on the Carnival Liberty (Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios) Ship's bar bourbon selection was limited to WT-8, Jim Beam White, OGD (but not 100 or 114 versions) and Blanton's.

I had all except OGD, but found out that the scotch and single malt selection on the Liberty was very good and discovered that I like those, so now when the bourbon is limited, I have a back up plan.

Hope you had a great trip Joe...how could not? Glad you discovered "foreign" whisky as a substitute!

Jono, It was a very relaxing time away with my wonderful Wife of 22 years, and we're already thinking about the next one!

I'd like to comment on your mention of a snifter. There have been several threads over the years regarding glassware for bourbon. You might find something interesting by using the Search function.

IMO the nose of most bourbon is too intense to benefit from the use of a snifter to concentrate it. A glass of smaller volume with just a bit of taper is adequate (again, IMO). Two examples are the Reidel bourbon glass and the Glencairn blender's glass. A few members have happened upon similar glasses that aren't as expensive.

I thought I could quickly find photos of each, but all I found were the threads linked above.

Yours truly,

Dave Morefield

Dave - Thanks for the welcome, and advice. Before reading your response, I enjoyed a dram of my second bourbon tasting - Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Lot B in a snifter, but I did find the nose a bit too intense, and the angle towards the opening too extreme, making small sips a bit of a trick.

Though I did find RVWSR to be very enjoyable all the same. I will be looking for a new glass.

Sat on the front porch, smoked a cigar and enjoyed a '65 Old Fitz BIB.

Now that's what I call "living the dream"!!!

I had good pour of Weller 12 (the newer black label) yesterday while watching the Colts and the ticker for the scores (good day for both the Phillies & Eagles). The more times I try this, the better I like it...I'm glad I didn't write it off completely after the first couple of pours.
