Nothing yet today , but yesterday it was Old Hickory 7 Y 86 proof bottled 1970, CC 17 Y, OFBB 2004 and WT 8 Y. The 2 last ones were enormously much better than the 2 first.

My son got home from 8 weeks of camp. We grilled 12 oz filet mignons on the new infrared grill. I had a generous glass of 4R Small Batch while grilling and eating. Looking forward to the weekend. More food, more fun, more bourbon.

Tonight I drew a name out of the box and the winner is....Van Winkle Family Reserve rye. Have also had some Bulliet and Old Forestor BIB from the late 1970's recently. And how can I forget, a pour of Pappy 23. Life is good!

I have a righteous chortle going as I write this. Some background:

  • I found a trio of BTEC Cab Franc bottles in, of all places, South Carolina while on vacation last month, but since I haven't been paid since the end of May (don't believe all you read about the leisurely life of being a 10-month schoolteacher), I really couldn't afford to buy them. But my companion, surprisingly nodding to my superior knowledge on the subject, bought them instead for the sole purpose of selling them on eBay. Net gain realized -- 56.17% over 13 days, or an annualized APR of 1,577.1%!
  • I used to try to pre-arrange delivery/sale of the BTEC offerings to retailers who would direct them to me, but stopped after the first five when I found them just not worth the money. Interesting, yes -- but not worth the kind of premium they command in order to actually open and taste. Thus, I've never bought the Zinfandel ones, and haven't tasted the last two releases. Why? Even if I love them, I can't re-supply them!
  • That said, I still have the first five bottlings -- the original trio and the two Chardonnay finishes -- open on the shelf. So, at this moment, I am enjoying (really!) Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection Chardonnay Aged After 6 Years In French Oak Chardonnay whiskey, over ice, with diet (Big K -- the Kroger house brand) ginger ale. It's very good. And, Hell, it's already open, so I can't sell it -- and I don't enjoy it all that much neat, and nobody of a bourbon mind-bent has come to call recently. Doesn't finding a way to enjoy it seem like the right thing to do?:skep:

I have three rules about bourbon/whiskey, and I'm afraid I'm on the verge of becoming an iconoclast -- even here on StraightBourbon.com -- suddenly and without warning:

  • --share it with folks who appreciate it;
  • --once opened, it has no 'real' value;
  • --enjoy it however you can.

Thus, two points: 1) you are welcome here; 2) in the meantime, I am drinking your whiskey:grin:.

One of my (own-made) Scotch blends, a combination of many single malts and a little blended whisky (to impart a very slight grain whisky element, I'd estimate 10%).

I just tasted regular Johnnie Walker Red Label next to it and mine is rather better. Mine is closer to Black Label Johnnie but trumps it again IMO.

It spreads evenly on the palate and ends with a slight yet noticeable peat and brine note. Every element in the Scotch whisky palate is present (fruit, peat, malt, sherry), but harmoniously so. It balances very well too younger and older whiskies.

It was designed to be drunk neat and does that to perfection.

I think this one will go to Gazebo upcoming together with the araks I've mentioned.

By request of the bourbon lovers at work (including my boss) I took my GTS '07 to work and 6 of us had a pour. Needless to say it was a real casual Friday, and everyone was blown away by the Stagg!

A Baltika 9 Extra Lager to quench my thirst after my run, and cutting the grass. Now on to JTS Brown BIB over ice. Probably look at WT12 SL next.

Glengoyne 10yo 86 proof, sent to me by another SB.com'r in exchange for two bottles of Old Heaven Hill 8/86. Only bottle I've seen of Glengoyne in OR is the 17yo and both Jim Murray and another SB.com'r say the 10yo is better (not to mention cheaper).

Really nice whisky, an unpeated malt monster. Having it neat (wife is having some on the rocks). May have to look into getting some more...

Last night after not having any bourbon for about 10 days, I had a vatting of Weller Special Reserve and Weller 12 yr over cracked ice. This was the first time I did something like that but it won't be the last. That was followed by some WT KS pewter top over cracked ice, very nice and extremely enjoyable, that was followed by a little Walker's Deluxe from the 70's, not bad but it would have been better if that was the first drink of the evening.

I'm doing some reading (about 3/4 of the way through The Black Dahlia) and starting out with Antique 107. I'm almost 3/4 of the way through the bottle too, so I anticipate picking up another one soon.

If you make it to Wild Turkey before bed you'll have my respect, and pity :lol:

I'm having a Corona. PVW15 next sounds good... it's been awhile since I sampled that one.

Started out with ORVW 10/107 and then Weller 12, which I'm really trying to warm up to. The Weller 12 tastes better this time around possibly due to it being after the ORVW. The other times the Weller 12 was a stand alone pour.
