While roasting 20 large burlap bags of New Mexico Peppers, Tecate, Tecate and more Tecate. It's an annual family gathering.

I went to watch the Louisville roller derby team Saturday night. There was a typical hot dog/pretzel/popcorn/beer/soft drink concession stand and two free standing bars. One bar was selling beer, including Guinness and Harp, which isn't bad for this kind of thing. The other had beer, wine, and liquor. For whiskey they had WR, JB White, MM, and JD.

I had one of each, except the Jack Daniel's.

After I got home it occurred to me that a similar bar in another state probably wouldn't have had three bourbons. I am becoming aclimatized.

While tailgating yesterday, I found the following rotation to be effective and enjoyable:

1. Old Forester (or Knob Creek) and Coke

2. 1800 Reposado Margarita

3. 1 bottle water

then repeat.

It was a good day, with good friends and good food.

Old Fitzgerald "Prime Bourbon" 86 proof, you know the one with the gold label in the squat bottle.

I started with one neat, it had way to much of Heaven Hill's EW mint in it.

BTW I like the mint in EW.

It doesn't taste like a wheater at all.

But then again I am comparing it to a Weller.

So I tried another over cracked ice and it brought out a lot of wood.

No sir, I don't like it.

Ok, now that I threw that Old Fitz down the sink I am trying some Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit, The Willie Wallace bottle.

I'll be short and to the point.

Neat,...thumbs down.

Over cracked ice,...I've had standard 101's that were better.

So I turned to the Old Faithful Herself, Wild Turkey 101 over cracked ice.

Yep, I'd say that it is a hot shot down the line for a stand up double.

Just had my first taste of Old Fitz bib. I'm a big fan of the VSOF and this puppy only cost me ~$12. My first impression was that there was almost no nose to speak of. The first taste was very lightly flavored, medicinal and alcohol. I decided to hit it a few times with the cappuccino frother to oxygenate it as I do with the cheaper stuff and low and behold it smoothed out nicely! I can now taste the family resemblance to the VSOF and must say it's pretty darn good for the price! Maybe one of the best bargains I've yet found. Anyone else have this?

I have an Old Fitzgerald BIB unopened, was not eager to get to it after the Old Fitz Prime I had earlier today.

It's really not too bad. I was reluctant to open mine as well. So far I put it ahead of Weller Antique and Special reserve as well as some other lower $20 bourbons. Maybe I'm just impressed I can stomach something under $20 :lol:

Yesterday, I finished off my BTEC Twice Barrelled while watching the New Orleans Saints beat the Tampa Bay Bucs in the Superdome. Great game, and great bourbon.

This evening, I'm having a pour of Lot B.

A 1955 Calvert VIP Canadian whisky, no ABV mentioned. Brought here by some nice cousins who inherited it from their parents. A nice blended drink, rounded and mild, with the rye showing through in a vegetal way. Hints too of sherry and very light vanillin. Reminscent in some ways of the Seagram 7 Crown I bought recently. The Canadian taste and style remain unchanged after these two generations, but at the same time, there isn't anything in the Canadian market quite like this today.

You think OF BIB is better than Old Weller and Special Reserve?

Four Roses 120th Anniversary, neat.

It is making Tuesday seem like Friday.

What does that make Friday like? A Monday? That'd suck...no drinking of FR120th on Fridays anymore for me:lol:

I don't care how good the bourbon is, if any makes a Friday seem like a Monday then down the kitchen sink with it.

Ok, I switched over to Wild Turkey Rare Breed.

Cuz I emptied the 4R's 120th, there was only 2 shots left.

I was on the fence for a while about WTRB but now I'm becoming a big fan.

But these last two botles have been very good.

I first became a WTRB fan when I did one after a PVW20.

I wasn't ready for that explosion but it sold me.

I'm enjoying some OF BIB again tonight. I definitely give it an edge over the Antique and SR. Remember, it's a $15 bottle so we're not talking "great" bourbon here. It's a bit rough around the edges and does well with some oxygen. But it has a nice honey sweetness and the alcohol burn fades after a few ounces have passed over my lips. All around a good cheap bottle to throw into the rotation to bring the everyday pour price points down.

I'm on one of the last few pours of Elijah Craig 18...I'll want an immediate replacement of this bottle as it's one of my favorites. Also enjoying a great new show on Fox "Fringe".

Due to a post by OscarV I stopped and grabbed one of those old label 80 proof Turkey's tonight (brown label). I nosed it in the car on the way home, go figure it's WT. upon arrival at home I poured a nice glass an found it very good, not Old No. 8 (early release) good but this one could be a step brother!

Hey Oscar, it's open when you want to try it!
