Dave, I enjoyed reading your notes on the ORVW 10/107 L'burg. That's when it was SW whiskey. When I first approached Julian about buying my own barrel from him, 10/107 was my first choice but he had recently switched from SW to Bernheim for it and I went with the 12yo Lot B instead. The 10/107 is one of my all time favorites. Slightly more spirity than the 15/107. I think it set the standard (as did Old Commonwealth) for all things done by Julian. It's still a good whiskey even though it's not SW in the current bottling.

Finished off a handle of ER10/101 from 1998 and now working on some Old Forester 100 from 1994.

Both of these are not for the timid. Full flavor and lots goin' on. The rye in the OF makes the two very different in speed...but both are outstanding and well crafted.

the last of my lot B found the bottom of my glass tonight. I am in DC with only a couple of bottles I am "mule"ing to Birdman... maybe he won't miss 3-5 oz :D

Beam's Choice, 8 years old in a decanter featuring a depiction of Manet's Gare Saint Lazare, from circa 1968. The stamp was still attached on one side but faded with no indication on the bottle of proof, but probably 86 proof (judging by similar decanters on the shelf it was bought from in Las Vegas).

The decanter is actually a glass bottle coated with a metallic bronze finish.

The liquor is in pristine shape. The nose seems different than anything out there today, aromatic with vanilla, wood and rye notes.

The body is medium, with a good sweetness and a dryish finish. I can't put my finger on what the "difference" is, perhaps it is more congeneric than most bourbons today of that age, but in a good way.

In a semi-blind taste test against Rare Breed brought down to about 86 proof, friends picked the Beam's Choice without difficulty.

A nice taste of history - for $29.99. I've indicated where SB-ers can get more in another thread.

It was 12 year old night for me as I spent the evening on a friends patio, chatting and bitching about work. We had a heavenly pour of Dalmore 12 and I followed that up with some Binny's Weller 12.

It was a perfect night to sit outside and shoot the breeze under the stars.

Got home from work and had a very small pour of 2007 GTS, followed by a pour of 2006 OF Birthday bourbon. Not sure what I'll have after supper. :rolleyes: Might have to get a suggestion from the folks in the gazebo.:cool: Joe

My two brother in laws over. The keg of Pyramid is at risk. I have backed it up with Blue Moon. There is NFL Football on the tube, and a pasta dish I worked up this afternoon.

Bourbon is in the future. I may not know much, but that I know.

Evan Williams black 7/90 backed with PBR. A certain bourbonian/author tells me this is the way EW Black was made to be consumed. I ain't arguin'.

In the middle is a bottle of Wild Turkey 80 proof that just provided its last pour. Surronding the empty bottle are my brand new purchases. On the left is Charter 101 and on the right is a bottle of 7 year W. L. Weller. The big upcoming decision is which bottle will provide the first pour. During the decision process, while I am enjoying the last sips of Wild Turkey, I will journey to the empty bottle support group and temporarily drown my sorrows while in wishful anticipation.

ORVWFRR H, Pappy 15, Stagg 03, Benchmark 6Y bottled 72 (inspired of the thread), Palo Cartado sherry, liberty ale, old stock ale, punk IPA (Scottish micro/small), Kozel lager and finally a gin and tonic. What tasted best? ORVWFRR on its on but pappy 15 alongside coffee and a soft hazelnut cake wasn’t to play with ether.

A Baby Saz Old Fashioned. I'm not sure I'll be able to finish it though. My stomach has been giving me fits all day today. It is 10:05 PM and I just finished my supper. I couldn't eat when Janean did...... So I warmed my BBQ pork steaks up in the micro. I ended up only eating one of them......

The Georgia Boubon Society just concluded with it's Inauguration of it's new President....ME! The Outgoing Pres. Jimmy (Troyce) handed over the briefcase with the secret code at 19:00 this evening. I am now in charge! To celebrate we started with a couple of SweetWater Brewery Motor Boat Ales (As they describe it, their "seasonal titillating version of an ESBBBBBBBBB"). Very good, it was. Next, on to the bourbons. Started the night with a blind tasting of Weller Special Reserve and Maker's Mark, enthusiastically poured and presented by my 9 yr old daughter. I can't even get her to pass me the salt at dinner, so I have no idea why she relishes doing things like this. Anyway, the results were not even close. Maker's won in a landslide. Proceeded onto Rare Breed, EWSB 98, ETL, Charter 101, Four Roses 120, and Weller 12 yr--Everett's Bottling. "Best of Show" here, was the Everett's Weller 12. Simply, OUTSTANDING! Now, here comes the scary part. Somewhere towards the end, I bring out a 1/4 full bottle of Dickel No. 12 that I've had buried in the back of the bunker for at least 3 years. It gets poured, and we begin the evaluation. Jimbo pops up with, "I'm getting rubber". "Rubber?", I say. "No, it smells like A RUBBER", he replies. :eek: Now, with the thought that a Dickel, smells like a Rubber, I will never have this whisky again. :falling:

In the spirit of education and putting forth effort so that I don't totally embarrass myself at the BTOTY in two weeks, I cracked open the special occasion bottle of WTAS that my wife bought me for my birthday.

This is as special of an occasion as I can think of. :grin:

I'm beginning to think you're taking this all too seriously...most of us expect to do so poorly we embarrass ourselves, the only thing keeping us coming back is that, for the most part, everyone else does just as poorly...we operate in "winning by sucking the least" mode.:slappin:

:lol: Scott, keep in mind that all the practice and knowledge in the world may still result in what happened a few years ago. If I understand the story correctly, as I wasn't there, but one contestant ID'd Maker's Mark as George T. Stagg, or vice versa!! :o

As for Friday evening's drinks, it was my wife's birthday and before we went out to dinner, I played bartender, making her a martini (Bombay Sapphire, Vya, a long shaving of lemon peel).

For myself, I decided to make my first-ever Sazerac, using Saz Jr and St. George Absinthe. It was interesting, but just a little too sweet for my taste. Maybe I'll try it again with a little less sugar. Next weekend we're having a couple over who like sweet drinks so maybe I'll make some for them (standard formula).

Pace yourself Dawg. That 8 PM kickoff is quite a long way off. You don't want to miss what should be a good day for the Gators. Then again, Miami could play them tough. In any case it should be quite the event.

The last 12oz bottle (poured in a glass) of the beer that my friend and I made. After a month or two in the basement this beer seems to have changed slightly. It has a certain sweet tinge to it that was actually there after one week of priming but nowhere to be found after two and any other time I drank some during the weeks that followed. All I have left now is a magnum that I wanted to save for a bit but now I'm thinking I should drink it sooner rather than later.
