unclebunk
wAT? I know that the website went down and it went off the NOM list. It must be discontinued. Time to stock up!!! That would be a major disappointment. Fortunately, I've got four bottles (3 unopened and 1 about half way gone) but no means any longer to get more, as HTWC was the only outlet that I knew of to buy it. I did, however, place an order yesterday and ended up grabbing all three Pura Vida's, Don Pilar anejo and two Reserva de Mexico anejos (plus another bottle of Plantation Barbados 5 YR because you can't beat the price and we're drinking it like water). I also bought a bottle of Antiguo de Herradura reposado locally which I drank regularly in Mexico City several years ago, along with too much Bohemia and Victoria beer. AdH was popular among the older, more traditional crowd that we often drank with (as was the Victoria), so I was happy to stumble upon it for the first time here in Chicago. bigtoys
Pura Vida line. Thoughts folks? I've actually come across very few on-line reviews despite Billy Gibbons association with the brand. coincidence! PV left over from our December Cabo trip first margaritas of the season tonight. found cheap limes ($1.49/lb--$4-5 elsewhere due to crop issues this year) filled the shaker. I believe it was 6 oz tequila, 4 oz fresh lime juice, 2 oz. simple syrup, 4 oz Agavero orange liqueu
Max Power
I want one of those margaritas. I've been hesitant to buy limes, but might have to do it with Memorial Day weekend coming up.

With 4 oz of Agavero orange I am not sure I would include 2 oz of simple syrup as well! My current favorite is typically with a nice reposado to strike a balance between wood and agave (for large quantities I use Espolon which is unusual in being good, reasonably inexpensive and generally pretty available). Don't have my recipe on hand. Oh wait, yes I do! I keep it on my phone in the event of a Margarita emergency...3 oz Espolon reposado or other suitable reposado.1 of Cointreau - Solerno blood orange liqueur, Clement Creole Shrubb and Ferrand Dry Curacao make interesting substitutes1 oz Damiana - my substitute for the simple syrup although I almost never use simple syrup as I prefer agave nectar. Not sure how much difference it makes using agave nectar but it just seems right! If I don't have Damiana I use agave nectar instead but the Damiana is better! 2 oz of agavero orange (which is made with a lot of agave nectar) in place of both the cointreau and the simple syrup can work as well.2 oz lime juiceI like this ratio but if my guests wants a touch more sweetness I can always add a bit more agave nectar! If I am feeling a bit frisky a dash of mole bitters or orange bitters can be nice. And if you really want to get all upscale cocktail-ish (I may have posted it before on the board somewhere) try this variation from Kindred Cocktails:Margara1 1/2 oz Añejo tequila3/4 oz Clément Créole Shrubb3/4 oz Lime juice1/2 oz Cynar (yes, thats right, artichoke based amaro in a margarita!)2 ds Angostura orange bitters (if you can find it)Shake, strain, serve straight up (or if you prefer on the rocks with a salted rim. I typically only salt half the rim so that you can choose for yourself if you want the salt)Hmm, this is making me thirsty!
bigtoys
I agree, probably a little sweet, but my wife liked it--figures.Gonna try it without the simple syrup next time, or cut it to 1/4 as much.I originally used simple syrup with Cointreau or Gran Marnier as the orange liqueur.I also have the Solerno blood orange liqueur.Gonna buy limes Friday (off work)--hope they're still cheap. sutton
Had a pour of the Casamigos Blanco ("George Clooney tequila") at a bar - nice enough, but not sure I'd run out to buy a bottle. On a side note: the bar wasn't very busy, and I had the first pour out of a new bottle. The bartenders decided to have a shot, then gave a shot to a couple of their what appeared to be "preferred" regulars. The bottle was down close to 50% by the time she came back and asked if I wanted another. I passed and felt a bit sorry for the bar owner. They seemed to be helping themselves to more than this pour as well ...

Perfectly fine, but maybe $10 overpriced.
tylermke
Having some Espolon blanco margaritas tonight. This is the third batch I've made in the past few weeks and have tweaked the ratios each time. I feel like tonight is the best of the three:5 parts tequila4 parts fresh squeezed lime juice2.5 parts Cointreau2 parts Agave sweetener1 part Grand MarnierA few splashes of Angostura Orange Bitters

I like a bit more lime juice than that. You can also try using an añejo tequila and taking out the grand marnier. Salud!
P&MLiquorsEric
Agreed. Cointreau and GM together are overkill. My killer margarita is 1 part tequila, 1 part agave nectar, 1 part lime juice plus a splash of GM on crushed ice served in a pint glass.

HighInTheMtns
It's a good thing we all have our own palates and taste preferences! Tyler is just trying to cover up the disgusting taste of tequila. Max Power, did I mention I hate tequila and need to sample various exquisite examples in order to rectify my erroneous opinion?

Max Power, did I mention I hate tequila and need to sample various exquisite examples in order to rectify my erroneous opinion? Jim, I just assumed that all hope was probably lost. There's only so much one can do. After all, if you can't find good tequila in Utah, where can you? And Tyler, I would still drink the hell out of the margarita that you made. I would suggest trying an añejo margarita. The one that Don Pilar made for me was pretty fantastic. Eric, again we all have our preferences like Tyler said. A full part agave nectar would be far sweeter than I would want personally. I'm glad that you've found some way to enjoy the horrible spirit that Jim despises so much. Beer&Bourbon
Just read through a fair amount of the thread. Thanks for the ideas folks! Headed down to Party Source in a few days. I'll be trying some rums and now some tequilas. I've had a few more tequilas and have started to come around to the spirit (after writing it off a few years ago). They're out of the Siete Leguas reposado, but may pick up the anejo. I want something with barrel character, but I'm willing to try the reposado (as Max recommends) in order to not overpower the agave flavor. I'll post here with results.Cheers,Roger

tylermke
Trying some Muchote Reposado tonight. Haven't had much exposure to the world of tequila, but this is a good start. Excited to dig into the rest of my samples courtesy of a great SB'er!

Beer&Bourbon
I picked up a Siembra resposado and a Siete Leguas anejo last night. I also got to try the Party Source select Casa Noble extra anejo, which I thought was great but a bit too expensive at almost $100. Thanks for the recommendations!I'm also barrel aging two bottles of El Jimador reposado in a 2L barrel with orange bitters and Angostura bitters for to make tequila old fashioneds. Pretty good neat after a week in the barrel, but may wait a few more days to mix up a cocktail and decide where to go. Anyone else on here barrel aging tequila cocktails? DF2 should be a great event. Lot 16 was really good. Lot 18 isn't quite as good, but is as good as blanco gets for the price.
