That's a good point Max because the tequila in it didn't match the mix perfectly. The distinctive flavor of a decent (it was a high-end bar) but not necessarily complementary tequila meant that the flavors didn't quite cohere. I liked the melon-like fruitiness of it though and would try again with the right tequila.

Incidentally it occurs to me mezcal probably wouldn't work, any brand, but maybe I'm wrong..

Gary

I haven't had as many Mezcals, but I can think of a couple that would work well. Del Maguey Espadin Especial would be great, but who would want to pay the price to mix that?

Sitting down with a nice selection with friends tonight:

Crotalo Anejo

Calle 23 Blanco

Corrido Blanco

Tequileno Anejo

Riazul Anejo

4 Copas Anejo

Tributo Reposado

and others.

Should be a nice night of sipping.

Haven't read the entire thread yet, but it's nice to know this is here. I sort of left Tequila behind when I moved into bourbon, but my explorations of that universe were interesting, and I'm glad to understand why tequila is a truly fine spirit, to be enjoyed and respected, rather than scoffed at as simply a source of hangover stories from spring break trips.

My favorites were Riazul Anejo (very Cognac-like to my palate, and complex) and Don Julio 1942, which was simply awe-inspiring.

Posted in the wrong thread last night, but...

Not sure if this is the right thread, but I went off the reservation tonight with Azunia Anejo & Fortaleza Blanco tequilas in my glass.

I need to score a bottle of the Fortaleza ASAP.

Finally decided to pick up a Don Julio 1942 for $80 on sale. Haven't tried it before, as the $100+ price always made me shy away, but I today was a good day. I'll probably open it up tomorrow night. Looking forward to comparing it to some of my other anejos to see if it's worth the premium.

Finally opened this one up last night...was very disappointed. I'm thinking there might be a cork issue, as there was a very strange moldy/musty smell when I opened the bottle. I'm going to let it sit for a couple days and see if things change, but it didn't show well at all compared to my standard DJ Anejo.

Would definitely think there is an issue of some sort. Standard DJ is a nice pour but I find the DJ 1942 to be substantially better. Smooth and easy drinking but still has plenty of tequila character. No musty smell at all.

I've mixed a lot of Tequila based cocktails for others over the years but never developed a taste for the liquor myself. May give it another go when the weather warms up.

I've never been a fan of the 1942 personally. I think for the price it's overly sweet and one-dimensional. But moldy/musty sounds corked to me.

There's plenty of tequilas that can have a mild to substantial musty aspect...DJ1942 is not one of them. That stinks that something that is normally that good wasn't for you. Can you return it to the store?

Got a hankerin' for Tequila this evening, so poured a Reidel Bourbon Glass of Tres Generaciones Anejo. This may be the first January since college that I have had a neat pour of tequila. :skep: And, I'm sure that tequila was probably Two Fingers...Yikes!!!

My next door neighbor brought me back a bottle of Los Azulejos Anejo in a cool decanter. Everything is written in Spanish. ANyone know anything about this?

K&L Spirits Blog in rant mode again, this time on tequila's degeneration to corporate slop:

http://spiritsjournal.klwines.com/klwinescom-spirits-blog/2013/2/19/tequila-woes.html

Since he is trashing his own dwindling or OOS inventory (Clase Azul & Casamigos), I think this is the lead in to him introducing K&L's new line of barrel selected exclusive tequila's & mezcal. Maybe I'm too young to remember how tasty and "real" tequila used to be. Or is this just more Driscoll dreck? I like how he conjures the image of the dejected Mexican tequila lover shuffling off to the mezcal bars to reminisce about the days when tequila was TEQUILA.

I've had 'real' Tequila, in Mexico over 40 years ago and the best thing I can say was it made me appreciate good Bourbon all the more.

I've had Los Azulejos Repo and Anejo and it always has a sour/medicinal sort of taste that I don't particularly love. The bottles look pretty awesome though.

He probably carries a bunch of stuff from 1416, 1472 and other massive contract distilleries. El Tesoro, 7 Leguas, Fortaleza, Casa Noble (not my favorite) and other small brands still carry plenty of tequilas that have a ton of agave. Don Pilar is a small brand that does it the right way as well. There's plenty out there, but you have to get through 140 distilleries and 1600+ brands/expressions to find it.

Picked up a bottle of Jose Cuervo Tradicional Reposado today. I know this isn't going to be as good as Don Julio Reposado. I just hope it will be decent.

I am big fan of the JC Tradicional line, especially the reposado. Great buy for the money.

It's not bad stuff at all! For $20 and change I really like it, especially chilled. Again, it's not Don Julio. But it will do for when I can't spend $45 on a single bottle of tequila (the majority of the time).

My son-in-law forced me to try Don Julio 1942 ... I had it neat ... the only Tequila I've ever enjoyed ... glad he twisted my arm.

In Cozumel right now but can't make it over to the mainland :-(

Selection by the pier is Ho-Hum... There's some 375ml Aha Toro bottles I might snag though.

I know, right! I figured I would be spoiled for choice when I went to Cozumel, but I just bought a Clase Azul to give as a souvenir gift.

Pick me up a Talisker 57 North from DuFry, will you? I totally forgot to buy one when I was there.
